My son will graduate on 8 Jan. 2016. He's on SHIP 12 DIV 061. My son just mailed a letter with graduation info. and a brochure listing nearby hotels were families can stay that are attending PIR.

Hello.

Those of you with this PIR date 01/08/2015,please come and join the PIR group to connect with other loved ones of Recruits and ask your veteran moms questions :-)

Sailors attending A school at TSC GL (Training Support Center Great Lakes - this is the main base not RTC) will move over there on PIR day directly after PIR.

You will have a short time period with your Sailor directly after PIR, less than an hour, not sure exactly how much, before he is bused over with the rest of the Sailors who will be students at TSC GL.

He will process in (INDOC). It will take 3-5 hours and then call you to come pick him up when he is released for Liberty. He will then have the rest of PIR day with you. Return time is usually 2200 hours (10 PM) . This is subject to change at anytime. He will then have daytime Liberty Saturday and Sunday. No overnight Liberty.

You may give him his cell phone and any other items once he has processed into TSC GL on Friday. So, he can take them back at the end of Liberty. He may not have them before that as RTC does not allow any civilian items onboard.

Many of the hotels do accommodate PIR families. Check for hotels in Great Lakes, Gurnee, and Waukegan. It is a good idea to check Trip Adviser for customer reviews. Many Navy families will comment from what we hear.

Just went through graduation this weekend, my son is staying at Great Lakes. We saw him for a few short moments directly after the ceremony. We were not able to give him his cell phone. The family left base to grab some lunch near by. He called us about 2 hrs after. When he called we drove over to the visitors center on base to meet him there. At that point you can take him off base....dinner, coffee and sitting in an actual chair seems to be a treat. When it was time to get him back to base we were able to drive him directly to his new barrack with the items we brought from home.
