A few weeks before going through second processing at MEPS, my fiance decided he wanted to change his rating from Sonar Surface to Sonar Sub (spoke to his recruiters, they said they'd take care of it) Anyways, he got to the point where he reviewed his contract and it hadn't been changed, and they said he would have to wait until a later time, because they couldn't change his rating right then and there at MEPS. He told me that he would be able to change it when he got to RTC. Is this true? I mean, once I start to hear from him, he can tell me himself. I am just curious! If he changes his rating then his A school place and length changes, so I am trying to look ahead into the different possible outcomes. Thanks!

It does happen at times that a recruit is able to change ratings at BC, but generally the rating he shipped with is the rating he will come out of BC with. In order to change ratings in BC, another recruit with a contract for the rating he desires would have to become ineligible for the rating (DQ'd for some reason or sent to SEPS) or a future Sailor with a contract for that rating would have had to have been unable to ship for some reason and the contract becomes available. He can ask and possibly have to submit an Enlisted Personnel Action Request. Just as at MEPS, others may be wanting the same contract and he has to be eligible for it. If his contract changes, then the STG contract will be open for another recruit.

To have made the change prior to shipping, a DEP Action Request (DAR) would have had to have been submitted by his recruiter at least 90 days prior to his ship date and then resubmitted every 30 days, so by the time he decided he was more interested in STS than STG, it was already too late. In order for the DAR to have been granted, another future Sailor with a contract for STG with a ship date that fell within the time frame that your now recruit could be in DEP would have had to have been dropped from DEP or otherwise become ineligible to ship with that contract for some reason and then your recruit's ship date would most likely have changed.

I know what you are going through. My husband is not a citizen and he got a 96%on his Asvab they wanted him in Nuke but hes not a citizen. So they put him in GSE. HE has been told by 3 Navy officials that once he get his citizenship right after boot camp they will change him over to Nuke. We even had a man from Washington call him and tell him that. I said wait till its in writing as nothing is true until its on paper. people can say anything but once its on orders then its real
