The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

Joanie, congratulations...that was quick...so much quicker than what Michael experienced. Looks like things are moving a little faster now. Hugs, Vee
What is the hold up with A school for Gunners Mate? My son PIR'd at the end of Dec.09. He was hoping to be done with it all by July to come home for few wks, but its not looking like that gonna happen.
Acannon, back in mid 09, the back up was for A.T.T. School (Apprentice Tech Training). The class was computer based learn at your own speed. Not everyone learns as fast as others. Some take longer which holds up a slot in training. Not all A.T.T. seats are taken by GM'S. There are other rates required to take class. The NAVY did funnel additional instructors into the program and started day and evening classes. The GM A-School has only so many students per class, maybe 15-20. The actual A-School for the GM rate is taking 10 weeks with one week for F.A.T.S. (Fire arms training simulator). Add it all up and you can see the reason for delays. The NAVY did take the S.C.C. (service common core) classes out of training and put them in boot camp. GM'S are moving faster, still a wait. When your son does start have him apply himself, job choice withing GM rate depends on class standing. Not all GM'S attend a C-School. Tell him to enjoy Great Lakes. Time goes by too fast, before you know its over. Gary T.
Woot, Woot!!! Thanks for your input, Gary...You are always right on.....Vee
Your welcome Vee. Glad to be of assistance. Gary T.
Hi acannon...I would like to add you and your son to our GM list here on the forum. If you would like me to do this, please tell me both of your first names so I can do the add. Welcome to our forum and we are here to help you stay positive and supportive for your son. Let us know if we can answer any other questions. Vee
Hello,

I am new to N4M this week! My son (Aarrin) graduated PIR last week January 15th and started A school in GL yesterday, he was told he would be in A school for 25 weeks but in the little bit of the discussion I was able to read below tonight it sounds like there are various lengths of time in A school. Can anyone tell me what determines the time they are in A school? Is it GPA?

This Website is Awesome, I wish I would have found it sooner!
Hello Lang, I assume your son Aarrin is going to be in the GM rate. In an attempt to answer your question the answer to GPA is no. Most folks generally assume when a sailor transfers to the A-School side of the base they are in A-School. In actuality A-School is the class a sailor takes for there rate.

A GM once he completes basic, will transfer over the the A-School side of the base. Usually they are placed on the Enterprise while they attend I.N.D.O.C. classes (indoctrination-rule and regs). Once they complete this they usually are sent to a permanent ship while they attend A.T.T. classes (Apprentice Tech Training). They then wait for the GM A-School.

It has been historically true this past year that there were several holds between these classes. Because of these holds it is impossible to put an exact time a sailor in the GM rate will be at Great Lakes. INDOC one to two weeks. ATT is computer based learn as you go (4 or 5 weeks) while A-School is ten weeks with one week FATS (Firearms Training Simulator).

GPA does play a role in choosing assignments upon graduation from A-School. The higher a sailor finishes the more choices he will have. Usually #1 will choose first #2 second and so on. The HOLD times between classes are filled with other classes to keep a sailor busy. Upon completing A-School they will usually wait for hard copy orders then a shipping date. Do not be alarmed my son spent 1 year and 1 day at Great Lakes, some more others less. I think less is used in today's vocabulary. The total GM school experience seems to be moving quite rapidly. Gary T.
BZ again to you, Gary......You are so right on always..... Take care my friend.
Gary, did Lang ever get back to us if her son is a GM or not? I'm waiting to hear from her so I can put them on our family list...Thanks, Vee
Hi Lang, this is Vee....As soon as you reply to Gary about the rate your son, Aarrin, is, we will know how to answer your questions more correctly. Also, if he is a GM, I will add you to our GM roster in this forum. So, let us know and we will take it from there. Welcome to this forum and welcome to N4Ms. Yes, it is an awesome website. Hugs, Vee
