Hello,

Im Tiffany and my husband will graduate Friday and then has A School for 3 weeks. He said we are going to Norfolk, VA. I am having anxiety attacks just trying to find a place to rent and how to go about finalizing the place all the way from Texas. I guess I need the dummies version with step by step instructions. We estimate it will be around October before we move but I want to get the ball rolling now. Ive looked at several websites and rental places. So if anyone has suggestions on what neighborhoods to avoid, places to live that are relatively easy to get to base, and any other advice I will be deeply grateful.

First make sure he has orders to Norfolk after A school.  Take a deep breath  try to relax. My son and his family have lived in the Va Beach area the whole time they have been stationed there and that is 23 of 26 years. will try to pull you up some links.

Having a problem getting you the link but go to groups and on the main page there is a group for Norfolk family wives etc click it that should help you out

thanks bunker

It's going to be ok. I've lived in Hampton Roads for the past three years. I had the same stress and fear. I would try to avoid Norfolk, and get something in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, or Suffolk. We decided to rent a townhouse in Virginia Beach. Maple Bay Townhouses. http://www.maplebayapartments.com Great little community. Safe neighborhood. We did and eight month lease because we really wanted to get into a house. So after we moved, we did our research. What we found was King's Grant neighborhood in Virginia Beach, was the best little tight nit, safe community. Great schools, great houses, and a bunch of great families!! The King's Grant neighborhood zip is 23452. We loved our experience here! Sadly we have to move to Washington in December. Good luck to you and your family!

my main stress is should we just have the navy move us there then look for a home while staying in hotel a few nights? Also his orders right now are on carbon paper. Are those the official or will he get others when he finishes school soon?

Hi Tiffany,

My name is Rachel. My husband and I recently got married a few weeks ago and I also will be moving to the Norfolk, VA area. I have been doing lots of reach as far as places to live and good schools in the area since I have a 5 year old daughter. I'm not sure how your transportation is for you but the number one place I am looking into at the moment is Chesapeake area. The crime is low and the school systems are pretty good. This is about 25 minutes from the Naval Base.

I have used websites such as apartmentguide.com and have made a few phone calls and most of them honestly have really good specials and lots of available space. Making phone calls can never hurt but try to use other resources as well.

My family and I won't be moving till January but I looking into a lot of different apartments starting now. Mention that your husband is in the military and you can receive discounts as well.

I wish you the best of luck. Maybe I'll see you around!
