I am looking for some guidance from other moms that have any insight regarding going into the Navy as Undesignated.  I am a mom of now 2 sons in the Navy.  One has been in for 3 years, and this site helped me through that in 2013 when he left for GL.  He is a GM stationed in Hawaii.  My 19 year old joined DEP and will leave for GL in 2 days as Undesignated, so again I am turning to my Navy Mom family for help.  There is a lot of background that goes into this and too much to post, but basically his recruiter scared him into thinking he would not be able to join the Navy at all if he tried to change his choice.  So he stayed with it because his dream has always been to be in the Navy.  He scored very well on his ASVAB so he should have had the choice of several jobs, all of which were available but not offered to him at MEPS. I have heard SO many mixed opinions on this, but most are not good and some say they are "scared" for him.  My older son, my son-in-law and all of their closest friends in the Navy all agree this is a horrible choice and worry about him as well.  I am trying to be supportive and keep him "pumped up" about it and say all positive things.  We are 2 days away from him leaving and we just had his going away party yesterday where again, several people commented on their concern for him going in without a specific job.  I barely slept at all.  Please help with any advice, guidance, support, etc. you may have.  I don't know what to do...

Question: How do you know what jobs were available, but not offered, at MEPS?

Really too much to get into on this post but I would be happy to message you if you can help me understand everything.  It is what it is at this point so now I just want to understand it all and honestly support my son with real information backing me up all the way...

Since your future Sailor has contracted within the S-PACT program, the information within Professional Apprenticeship Career Tracks (PACT) Program will be of interest to you. There are links for groups within that Page and you can see what others have to say.

You will be able to enjoy extra time with your Sailor following PIR. (See PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend.)

Thank you very much for these links.  I know they will help!  Between these links, the PACT Mom group and these discussion boards, I hope to make it through this with my sanity! :)

From reading, it seems like it's too late to change anything, however, if he scored high enough on his ASVAB to get a different rating, I would have told him to hold out for it. In the Navy things can change all the time and it may work out well for him, but I'd never suggest anyone go in as undes. Just my opinion.
