So proud of my son! But lots of tears! To help me deal better, I have started my own "boot camp" to lose weight while he's gone. I hope to have him proud of me when I see him in June at graduation. He is my motivation!

Anyone else have a seaman recruit in Chicago today?

PIR is probably 06/20/2014 (most likely) or 06/29/2014 (possible if too many recruits arrived for the TG).

Hi!  I am new to this as my son is leaving for his "boot camp" in about 3 weeks!  I am starting to get very nervous, and know that I will be extremely proud of him as well.  That's a great idea to start your "own" boot camp.  Do you have any tips that you could pass along since it may still be fresh in your mind?  Is it true you only hear from them once?  Thanks, Peter's Mom, Tracy

You won't hear from your then SR much, but you will hear from him more than once. You will most likely get the scripted "I'm here!" call once he arrives at the RTC, which will be the last call he makes from his cell phone, so make sure it is charged when he heads off. You should get an "I'm still alive!" call sometime between week 2 and week 4. Most Sailors make the "I'm a Sailor!" call in the last week before PIR. He may also make other calls for information or if the RDC schedules them. He will begin writing letters on the second Sunday after arrival (third Sunday for some) and will be able to write letters every Sunday after that and perhaps one or two other days as time passes--that will depend on the RDC and how the division is doing. Letters go out in the mail on Monday.

Arrival and What Happens at the RTC within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will let you know what will soon be happening.

For now, focus on the things in Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for....

Tracy, I am kind of new however my son left last week. From what I understand you actually get 2 phone calls. One 15 second scripted call when they arrive at boot camp and then another one toward the end when they tell you they made it. My son's recruiter told me that a DIV (group they are placed in) can earn extra calls. When my son called when he got there he said that would be able to call me in about two weeks. So we will see.

As far as tips go, spend as much time as you can with him. Take him to dinner or to a favorite spot. Enjoy him as much as you can. Have a, "anchors aweigh" party or something like that. We did a cake with a cool "anchors aweigh" picture on it. It was a lot of fun.

Talk to his recruiter if you have not yet. Ours is very very nice and helpful They seem to really want to make the whole family feel like they are part of the experience.

I will let you know  more tips as I think of the.

Melanie
