My son has been on his first deployment and will be returning soon.  He's given us a return date, but continues to tell us that it may not be that exact date.  So it's been hard for me to make plans to be there when they get back to Camp Pendleton.  He also tells us he may not get time to come off base as there will be lots for them to do once they return, so he's worried we'll have traveled all that way and he won't get to spend time with us.  Then recent, he did say he will have a 4-day weekend when they get back.  So it continually changes.

Overall, even though it's not clear on exactly when they'll all be back, I'm just so ecstatic I'll be seeing my son soon!!!  We've been keeping in contact via FB Messaging, iMessaging & Facetime Calling, but all that isn't the same as having my arms around my son and giving him the biggest hugs!!!

So with all that said, do any of you have any advice on when deployed units return back to Camp Pendleton, such as do they allow families on base to welcome the buses back?  If so, do I need to contact someone before arriving to get some kind of clearance to get on base? I wasn't there when he left, but my little sister was there, and she did say they allowed her to get on base to be with my son until he & the other soldiers boarded the buses to leave to March Air Force base to fly out.

Thank you.

Does your ship have a family readiness group? I know my son put my name on their list and we got exact information from that group who was in contact with the command of the ship. They gave us information on how to get "vetted" to get on base the day they retuned, dates, and answers any questions we had.

My son will be flying into March Air Force Base, then they'll be bussed back to Camp Pendleton. They've been in Australia since April. As far as a family readiness group, I'm not aware of one, though it would make sense if there was one.  My son's a Navy Corpsman, and he's been deployed with a Marine Unit.  I've been relying on him for the info on their return. He did call me yesterday and did say they were instructed they should be getting more info on their return date so I'm hoping VERY soon I'll know too.

In meantime I was thinking of getting something for me & my family to wear when he returns, to show our support and love. Something not big (like tshirts or a banner), but smaller and simple. I was thinking like a homemade 'welcome home' pin, or same colored flowers. I've been searching on Pinterest & the internet, for ideas, but haven't found it yet.

if you google symbols for navy corpsman you can find several that you might be able to use for a pin or transfer for t shirts

Thank you judy r.  I did find a few symbols I liked, so I may print one out and attach to a flower.  I'll be making for my family to wear for my son when he returns.  I'm not very crafty, but for this I'll give it a shot :)
