For my son's farewell party I am asking guests to write him a short, uplifting note...if they have children (our family friends or his little cousins) for them to color a picture. I'll tell them this when they RSVP so I can collect them at the party and they have time to be thoughtful about it. This way I can mail him something every day, not just from me as I'm sure he'll tire of my worrisome questions.

He may get a little down he wasn't there, but he'll feel good that he wasn't forgotten and ignored. Go for it!

Hello, This is my first post so I hope I'm not repeating what has already been asked. My son is entering the Navy this month and wondered if there is no contact at all during boot camp? When does a parent get a mailing address? Thanks,

Okay, thank you . He must have meant for his bills then, he said they're taking $ out of his check but I knew that was going to happen. I was pretty sure he didnt need 'walkin' around' money. :~)

Do not send cash to boot camp, they can get in trouble for that. They don't need money during boot camp, nowhere to spend it. They are issued a chit book for the NEX which covers all their needs, and that is deducted from their first paycheck.

In my son's form letter he said he needs money deposited into his acct. He didnt say how much. I'm wondering if I can stick a prepaid visa for around 50 bucks in the letter I'm sending him today and I'll go put some money into his account later. He must have kept his debit card and wallet, it wasnt in the box. Does anyone know if I can buy him a cash card and send it, or can I stick some cash into his letter? How much money do they need in BC? He just got there. Does anyone open the letters…

Some sports and news article's can and will be taken from them. Family pictures are a HUGE help, and scanning a few on regular paper is a wonderful idea! Less bulky and if they get ruined in the shuffle they can be replaced. About the pay, their initial uniform allowance does not cover all uniform and incidental costs. They receive deducted pay throughout bootcamp to cover this. It does however take up to a month for their direct deposits to post to their account depending on when they get…

Leave is usually not granted in between bootcamp and "A" school.

Hope this helps.

My son left for boot camp today, I appreciate all the wonderful information on here. I can see there will be a great need not to stress and to be patient. It is reassuring to me that our young people will be able to survive without us hovering over them. I am really looking forward to getting his address. I'm going to get some funny cards for him and send him photos.

I found it much more sad with him gone today, I really thought I would be ok but I felt very sad when I went and looked at his vacated room. I'm so proud of him making it into the Navy and the nuke program.

My husband and I have our home up for sale and hoping to move to Utah from North Carolina.
