Our son just arrived at RTC on 3/15, so only know his division from the recruiter. I'm curious.

we are in the same boat so to speak!

haha. does your recruit play an instrument? I think 927 is a division that will play or sing in the PIR.?

yes...he does he plays the tenor saxophone or any saxophone. I find this totally funny because...he was told by friends/family who have retired from the USN to fly under the radar at RTC, saying you can play an instrument isn't exactly flying under the radar!

what state are you from? I'm from MO.

Delaware, but we live in Italy - I'm a teacher with the Dept of Defense Schools. Our recruit, Michael, enlisted from here.

My son graduated last October.  He also was told to fly under the radar so he did not say he played an instrument.  After about 3 days in the "regular" division he was going crazy with the antics of others in his division.  They came around again asking about instruments & his hand shot up.  He said he figured it couldn't be any worse. Haha.  After he graduated he said it was the best decision he made there.  Although it is extra work to be in a 900 division, he said the diversion from the regular boot camp stuff (to practice, etc) kept him sane :).  I should note that it seemed that his division got more phone calls than the other divisions at the time, but this could have been because of his RDC - who my son thought the world of, not just being in a 900 division

I wam hoping my son has a similar experience. He is older and was kind of anticipating/dreading having to put up with the "youngsters" antics

Thanks for the encouragement. I guess he has to get a phone card - is that possible, or should I mail him one?

My son was 25 and married when he went and some of the "youngsters" were his biggest aggravation. By the end the RDC's had mostly fixed that, but it took a while. He wrote in every letter that things would be soooo much easier if everyone shut their mouths & open their ears. But all in all he did OK, but he says he wouldn't want to do it again.

I sent a phone card with him, but I know they can buy them at the NEX.  I actually ordered one online where they sent me a code # by email so I could just tell him that.  I was also able to monitor the balance online & put more money on it when needed so he wasn't cut off during a call  They don't use all that many minutes, but all the phone cards take a fee off of each call made from a pay phone - usually around a dollar or so. So the balance can go down quicker than you would think.

thanks. We are in Italy but have a Delaware number on Skype. I will do the online thing but still have to send the card or the code via usps either way. my son is 27.

If you get the online thing & he gets a NEX card to make his first call you might be able to read him the numbers over the phone for him to use on later calls.  I wish you the luck we had - he was able to call nearly every week except the next to the last week I think.  It was a real help for his wife.  But I know this was a rarity.

I thought they only could call 3 times while at boot camp

we were told they could get the calling card during boot camp at the store there on base, we found one after MUCH looking before he left at Walgreens, a real shock.
