My son's PIR is 11/14 and since we are flying I am trying to put aside what we will need to bring him. Other than his phone, laptop and civilian undies (must be white???) he asked before he left for his sunglasses and watch but are those even allowed and if so, does he need to worry about theft? I saw the post about laundry being stolen. Also, once he gets some liberty and wants to visit his  brother who lives in Chicago can he have his civilian clothes like his winter coat, gym shorts and jeans or must he wear the uniform even on liberty??? If he gets to use that stuff after a few weeks I would love to bring it out to put in his brother's apt.

Does their locker for their belongings at GL actually lock?

Thanks for all your help. This site is great.

Yeah, it is frustrating to have a perfectly good coat and not be able to wear it.  But it also makes you stand out as a sailor, which is not great in some liberty situations.

My son just went through PIR 9/19/14. The Navy didn't give him a choice regarding his uniforms, coat etc. they just issued them and took it out of his paycheck.
Good news!! I just found out that the Navy will give an initial clothing allowance and also an annual replacement allowance. Check out https://www.navycs.com/blogs/navy-clothing-allowance

The initial allowance is what pays for their initial uniform issue, not taken out of their base pay as is commonly thought.  It goes into their check, and comes right back out.

The reason that first check is small is they are paying for non-uniform items which they are required to have (running shoes, underwear, socks, ditty bags, soap, etc.). Used to be they had to bring all that with them, but it is simpler for training purposes, and security, for them all to buy identical items at the NEX.

That annual allowance is a lot smaller than it seems.  Uniforms are expensive, and many sailors use it to buy sets to set aside just for inspections.

They must wear specific coats with their uniforms, and are issued one.  A peacoat is optional, but is very specific in design/color.  Most civilian ones are not an exact match.  He will need a coat for civilian wear, eventually.

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE INFORMATION!!! A & C school GL
