Future Gunners Mate - Mom
Hello everyone. I have a lot of questions about the Gunners Mate rate. My older son is an FMF Corpsman and my youngest son will be leaving for Bootcamp in November and then staying in GL for A school. I would love any information you can give me. Thanks.

Good Morning Sockmonkey! My son is currently at GL. He graduated BC on 7/10 was on hold for ATT school for about 4 weeks. Should be starting GM school in a couple for weeks. There are 3 phases for liberty. Phase 1 is can't leave base and civilian clothes only in the room. Once requirements are completed can be phase 2. Can wear civilian clothes on base and can leave base with a buddy but must return to base by midnight. They can fill out a chit for overnight liberty in phase 2 but still must have a buddy. If family is there to sign them out then you will be his buddy and must sign him back out/in. My sailor told me that they extended his schooling and will not be done until the middle of December. Huggybear. Thanks so much for the information! My older son went through Bootcamp and then went to A school in San Antonio for A school. The GM rate is completely new for me. Is a 4 week wait to start school pretty normal? What do they do during that time? Also - if we decide to drive up and visit - does he have to ask for approval to stay overnight in advance? Thanks for you help!

Sockmonkey, The hold time varies. I heard others say their sailor was on hold 2-3 months to class up. During hold times they have to clean the ship, have a checklist of requirements that need completed to get to phase 2 and phase 3. I haven't heard of anyone being phase 3 before starting classes. Every morning they have muster varies for mine, could be 5am -630am. I texted mine last night and had to muster at 6pm. They are assigned duty times. Mine started out duty schedule every 4 days time varies. Now he has duty every 3 days. One time he had duty from midnight to 4am. Last night he had duty midnight to 2am and he had a test this morning. They can also sign up for volunteer duty in the community. It's really boring being on hold. They are also not allowed to leave their room until Liberty is called for the day.
Yes, he will need to get a 'chit' for overnight stays and a 'buddy' must be with to sign him out. If you visit you can be his buddy. Might be hard to get a 'chit' until he phases up. Must always have at least 1 buddy at all times while off base. Only allowed civilian clothes in room during phase 1. Civilian clothes allow on/off base when he makes phase 2. During phase 2 he has to be back by midnight unless a 'chit' has been approved.

Huggybear So how is your son liking the Gunnersmate school? I really don't know know much about this rate and I would love to hear what they learn in school and what their job will actually entail. Thanks for all of your information and help.

So he graduated 7/10 and is not starting school until September? So if my son graduates 10/9 and he tells me the school is 126 days that does not mean he will only be there 4 or so months? Sounds like it can be much longer than 126 days? Am I reading this right?

Navymom - That's what I read also. My son leaves for Bootcamp in November and then should graduation in January. I originally figured he would finish school before summer - but it looks like it could take longer. Apparently they have them work some type of duty while they wait for school. Please keep me updated on how things work out for your son - I am curious what my son will be experiencing also.

HI girls, I will keep you informed by what Happens to my SR who is graduating 10/16 and he told me school is starting 10-19 for him and it's also 126 days. That is a far cry from the 27 weeks listed in the contract, so was reading around to see if I could find out why , but not having much success. Nice to be here.

Kimmyp, That's the same as my sailor. was told 27 weeks but he just started a few weeks ago and should graduate around Thanksgiving. His PIR was July 10. He was on hold for about 3 weeks and then did ATT school for 4 weeks. Don't be surprised if he get put on hold for a few weeks and then do his ATT school.
