Any places that are you just out of this world that we should eat at?  We have already had Girodano's, but curies of other places to try as well.

It's not like crazy out of the blue, but we loved Timothy O'Toole's right by six flags. Also, there's a really good Sushi place pretty much behind it. They offer fried sushi for those who aren't ready for real sushi. I'm trying to think of what else was good around there. I think we spent most of our money at O'Toole's, sadly. lol There's a Rain Forest Cafe at Gurnee Mills which is a fun experience if you've never been. I wish I would've posted something like this while we were there. Oh, one more! C.Y.O.C (Create your own cheesecake) is down the street from the commissary and their sandwiches really are to die for!  (They do military discount only to members in their uniform.) Now I want one! lol Good luck in your search! :)

I am a Sushi junky do you remember the name of the place?

I kinda had to search for it, but I think this is it:

Hayashi Japanese Restaurant

6641 Grand Ave
Ste C
Gurnee, IL 60031
(847) 856-0270

Yes, CYOC has AMAZING Philly Cheesesteaks!! It's an order at the counter kind of place, but totally worth It for lunch or a quick meal! Full Moon restaurant on Skokie has awesome breakfast, especially their steak skillet! There's a really good steak restaurant but I can't remember the full name... something Saloon and Eatery, that has really good steaks and awesome steak fajitas. We've lived here for 6 months now, so we've tried a few places haha! If you're going into Chicago, we ate at a little BBQ restaurant called Smoque that was featured on Guy Fieri's Diner's, Drive-ins and Dives show, which was really good. There are others in Chicago that have been on the show as well that we've been meaning to try. Enjoy your weekend!

Gene and Jude's Hot Dogs! Oh my goodness, so good. We just happened upon it while driving around after PIR, and we've been back several times since moving here. Wildberry's is a breakfast/brunch place that's also pretty awesome.

When we were there 4 years ago the best place we ate at was "Wildberries" near the base. Great food. My son still talks about the banana bread french toast. It was very popular with the sailors.

Looked up some places via Yelp.  Any confirmations on any of these for 2014, please share:

Breakfast

Egg Harbor Cafe
512 N Western Ave
Lake Forest, IL 60045
“The Cinnamon Roll French Toast is excellent as well.”
“They have fresh-squeezed strawberry orange juice, and their hot...”
“The skillet was delicious and I highly recommend it.”

Lunch

Twenty East Cafe and Bar
20 E Scranton (847) 234-1500
Lake Bluff, IL 60044

Really enjoyed the lunch we had. Jalapeño gnocchi? Oh yes!

Great lunch option! We decided to skip the sandwiches and share a bunch of appetizers.

They also had great Micro brews and generous wine pours with super good wine for the price. It's our new favorite spot in LB.

Speedy Taco (near the base)
2722 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive
North Chicago, IL 60064

Pretty thrilled that this place is so near the base! Legit street tacos...even if you go gringo and get the 3-6 p.m. special of beef tacos, and get the "American" lettuce and tomato version versus the onion and cilantro version, they're still scrumptious. Don't go expecting ambience...it's just counter service, a few laminate tables, and soda you can buy from the can from a or serve-yourself fountain soda..

They've got everything from tacos and tortas to hot dogs and pizza puffs - they even have kid's meals for the young'uns. …the cilantro puts taco bell to shame.

Food came pretty quick but they give you chips and salsa and the salsas cold. They also don't take American Express.

…for 6 bucks I got a carne asada fully loaded mini football size burrito!!!

Taqueria Toluca

822 10th St
Waukegan, IL 60085
Phone number (847) 244-7851

My favorite Mexican restaurant in Waukegan which is saying something in a city full of Mexican restaurants.… Some individual item are only a buck or two.

(2012) I take Real Taco's. SO I had El Pastor- Cecina, Arrerecha, and Asada. Delicious. I had a partner in this Taco adventure all together we had 7 tacos, order of guacamole and [Horchata] and came to 14.88$.

Jersey Mike’s Subs
106 E. Kensington Rd.
Mount Prospect, IL 60056

…its a chain with over 400 franchise locations, but everything you eat is made fresh to order at your particular location.

“...service the Lake Bluff Brewery right next door by providing some of...”

“All organic foods to go or can be made in store.”

“Love the $2 craft beer selections.”

Wisma
TAKE OUT Lunch or Dinner
24 E Scranton Ave
Lake Bluff, IL 60044

Cute little place to eat. Although the food requires reheating, it's still absolutely delicious. The wine and beer selections are great, as well. The workers are all friendly and helpful and offer good advice if you don't know what to get. …thai curry and it was just as amazing.

“All organic foods to go or can be made in store.”

You can drink a glass of wine, have a bottle of beer, and warm up whatever food you purchase there.

They have some special artisan types of cheeses and meats as well. Good selection including vegetarian options as well.

…local, sustainable products with zero ingredients you can not pronounce.

Dinner

Rita’s
13744 Rockland Rd
Lake Bluff, IL 60044

“The food was great: Friday night fish fry with Lake Perch.”

Di Pescara
2124 Northbrook Ct
Northbrook, IL 60062

“For my entree I tried the miso glazed sea bass - delish.”

Call ahead to make a reservation. We dined on a Wednesday night and it was very busy.

Upscale restaurant, upscale town...located in a shopping mall? My only reason for knocking down a star is the location. Found it hard to locate, as I didn't realize it was literally ATTACHED to the mall.

We tried the Artichoke Alla Marco, we didn't know what to expect and it was delicious. We also had some salad, shrimp and sushi. It was all very tasty, the portions were more than enough.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Maine lobster salad, which was large enough for two to three people to share, and gluten free to boot.

Instead of Jersey Mike's do CYOC (Create Your Own Cheesecake). It's right down the road from GL, and is way better. They do discounts for military in uniform (as I said toward the top). I think their hours might be a little weird, though, so you might want to look them up. I didn't try any of the other places, while we lived there. Up at the top was my original post with some suggestions. Good luck :) One more I didn't mention was "UNO" the Chicago grill (which is right be the Gurnee mall) I liked their soups and sandwiches. My husband wasn't too impressed, but I like them. Also, there's a Chicago River Cruise tour that feeds you lunch or dinner I think. You can get info and discounted tickets at ITT in the student NEX on the GL student side.

Great thanks!   Good to know about Jersey Mike's.   If Uno's is Pizzeria Uno's - yep, we've had one here in my area of Michigan.  It's good for pizza lovers.  There's a HUGE number of great pizza places in Chicago:  25 Top Pizza Places (Don't know which are near Great Lakes tho!

Here's more info about the Chicago River Cruise tour - which is for good weather, not so much of that happening in March.  Also, newly graduated PIR sailors may or may not want to drive into Chicago for this...  They might. want to eat  quick and relax with family, spouses..

My husband and I took the tour, which is wonderful, great for enjoying the beautiful buildings, architecture of Chicago, but dinner or lunch wasn't included, just snacks.  (We had made reservations downtown for after.)   If you are taking a PIR grad, they might rather be closer to base.

From Trip Advisor:
The architectural tour offered by Chicago Line Cruises was highly recommended by Frommers, so I set out to take one on a cloudy, blustery November morning. Thankfully I had dressed warmly, as the best seats were to be found on the upper deck.

...They offered complimentary Starbucks coffee, cookies and muffins onboard....enjoy... the 90-minute tour.

Thanks for sharing this.  We might check this out next time we get to GL, hopefully soon!
