My husband has been at boot camp for just over 2 weeks. He got to call me yesterday and we talked for 20 minutes. He said not to make travel arrangements now but to wait for the "I am a Sailor" call. Is this a good idea? How long before graduation will be he able to call me. I need to fly from California, make hotel reservations, and rent a car. I did get my packet and his graduation is scheduled for June 5th

Also, he is going to "A" school at Great Lakes, is he likely to get the weekend off (with returning to base at night) or just Friday afternoon?

Thanks, Rachel

NO, NO, NO!!! Make arrangements NOW! especially if you are flying. See Saving Money PIR Weekend and PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend.

You will not get the "I'm a Sailor!" call until a few days to a week before PIR depending on when he goes through Battle Stations-21 (BST) and by then prices will be up and you may not be able to get the reservations that you want.

He will have daytime Liberty every day of the weekend after checking in at the TSC. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend.

Check your My Page.

It sounds like your husband has the 2 week blues similar to what every other SR has gone through, including my son! Just keep positive, put out that energy and keep on writing him the motivational/inspirational, humorous, and what's happening in the real world stuff.  Things should turn around!  Nevertheless, I'd suggest making arrangements because after reading some posts from other loved ones who did the "late arrangements" they didn't have the best prices and accomodations.  Good luck to you and your husband!   =)

Rachel start planning your trip. You can either use priceline and add the insurance that allows you to change the date or buy from an airline with option to change. I hear a lot of people book their hotel stay with the Navy Lodge.

The Navy Lodge is one of the lowest priced options, but Sailors staying in GL are not always able to go there, just be aware of that.

Southwest allows you to change reservations if needed without an additional fee other than any change in the cost of the flight.

YES make reservations! Just make sure to get trip insurance on your tickets and you should be fine. The longer you wait the more expensive your tickets are going to be, and if you wait until the "I'm a Sailor call" you might not be able to book a hotel room or a ticket. I stayed at Navy Gateway which is on base, very nice, convenient, and inexpensive. You can only stay there if you or someone with you has a military ID. Your husband should be sending you a DD-1173 form that allows you to get your military spouse ID. Tell your husband not to worry, it's easy to get discouraged but as long as he pushes through the hard times he will be fine :)

Dubbean- If you have not already you may want to post this same question on the Main discussion page of Bootcamp Moms.  His advice is incorrect.  Some sailors do not have battlestations 21 until Wednesday of graduation week.  He would not be making the I'm a sailor call until mid-day Thursday or later.  That would not allow you any time to travel out there.  If you can make travel arrangements with Southwest airlines.  They are the least expensive and If plans change you can change you ticket or arrange to use it at a later time.  Since he is going to A school at GL you will have the weekend after he gets checked in to his A school.  The main bootcamp page will have more folks that can give you more information.

Thanks everyone. I will book my travel arrangements this week. I also like Southwest and I found I can cancel the hotel with 24 hour notice. With all that in mind, I will book everything. I'm glad I asked.

:o)

And when your travel arrangements are set, let your Recruit know. It can be a morale booster for Recruits to know that the folks at home are confident in their success and eagerly looking forward to PIR.

Oh my goodness Rachel - I got the I'm a Sailor call while I was traveling from San Diego to Great Lakes for graduation.  My son's BS 21 took place the week of graduation.   Please make your arrangements now.  I flew Southwest into Milwaukee and then rented a car and drove to Great Lakes and stayed at the Navy Lodge.  The drive from Milwaukee into Great Lakes is slightly longer than driving in from O'Hare, but I didn't have to navigate through Chicago traffic during rush hour so I thought that was the better route.  Good luck to both of you!! :)
