My daughter’s BC starts in January, 2015 and I had some questions regarding what her experience will be like.

What is January weather like in Great Lakes? Is there anything she should prepare for?

Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

I live about 33 m iles from the base. It does get cold and snowy in January. If you are from a warm state and have never had a cold winter it will get to you and you will probably hate it. I have lived here most of my life and I'm getting pretty sick of the snow after the last winter we had.

Thank you Diane for your helpful reply. We are in California, the only experiences she had in the snow were few ski trip in the mountains and that’s what worries me the most.

Cold, snowy and unpredictable. Our winters have been very strange last couple of years and you just never know what the season will bring.

Thank you staceybea12 very much for your helpful input, I appreciated.

Our son graduated Jan. 4, and it was snowy and cold!!!! Bring lots of warm clothes and get there a day ahead of time in case flights are cancelled. Ours was cancelled for our return home but made a different flight to a different town! It was all worth it though:) so happy to see my sailor!!! Haven't seen him since and can't wait to see him again!!!

Thank you Stevensmom for your helpful information, congratulations to you and your son. my daughter’s BC starts on January 6th, the graduation will be sometime in March, hopefully the weather will be warmer then. All the best to all sailors!

All4Navy:

Our son starts BC on January 6ht, as well! How are you doing with her upcoming departure?

Hi hearthaven, I am at peace with her leaving now and try to keep myself busy not to dwell on this too much. Her best friend is staying with us til the day she leaves. Saturday our whole family will have a farewell luncheon for her. We will take her to the hotel on Monday and see her sworn in on Tuesday the 6th. Don’t know what exact situation will be, but will try to see her off. Hang in there!

Cold and snowy.  My son was there from January to March for boot camp.  It didn't bother him really because we live in the NW and it can get snowy and cold here (NOT like Illinois though!). His division mates from the South who had never seen snow much less have to march in it were cold most of the time.  Layers...lots of layers worked for me when I was there 4 Mar 2012 for his PIR. It was still cold and the wind coming off the lake was brisk!

Thank you DramaSoul for sharing your experience with me. I hope the recruits will get the appropriate clothing for the season. I heard during the cold weather all activities are done indoors, I wish it’s true.

Best regards,

Charles

All training is indoors all year long. The only time that the recruits are outdoors is when traveling between buildings.

Thanks you lemonelephant for your confirmation. Have a nice week.
