Hi again Susan... it is a bit difficult to get the pass to get on and off the base but once one gets that worked out... it was easy for us... like I said we did get the run around since Alex was supposed to have it put in 48 hours in advance of us getting there and didn't because he couldn't get there on time (when they were open, and the phone numbers were wrong) but the gate gaurds did say that if we checked into the Navy Gateway they would then send a new list to the gate.... however the gate guards finally did right up the pass and we didn't have a problem getting on with Alex... just showed our pass and Id's... hope it all works out for you.

Hi everyone!! I'm so glad I found this site -- it has already answered a few questions. My son graduated from BC on July 24, and arrived in P-cola last week. He is going to be a CTR. Actually, his original contract was for Aircrew, but he wasn't able to pass the Level 2 Swim Qualification, so he had to be reclassified. In truth, I believe it was a blessing in disguise because I believe my son is better suited to a CTR job than an Aircrew job. The huge downside is that when he lost his old contract, he lost his signing bonus, and he lost his guaranteed E-4 rate upon completion of A-school. When he finishes A-school for CTR, he will still only be an E-1, and he is totally bummed out about that.

Does anyone know when the CTR classes will begin? He has heard anywhere from two months to four months.

Jilreen, My daughter was supposed to be in the Arabic class, but ended up in BC for 4.5 months instead of 8 weeks...closed fracture of her ankle. She was at Great Lakes, originally supposed to graduate April 24, but ended up graduating July 2nd.

A week before we wanted to arrive, Kirsten called my cell phone from the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites on the Postgraduate School Base ($35/night for a single room with a queen bed, plus they can bring in a roll-away); that way I was able to guarantee the reservation with a credit card. I'd have a back-up, but a week should be ample time to cancel those reservations without penalty. The Navy Lodge (on Farragut Way) runs $76/night and is very nice...I stayed there when I brought down Kirsten's civilian clothes and laptop a few weeks ago. The Army lodge (on the DLI campus) runs about $65/night. All have the 1-week before checkin reservation policy for family members of the students. Good luck!

You all are so wonderul!! I am at work now so not able to check often online right now. I will have my son check the Navy Lodge.. I talked with him briefly and he thought it might be difficult because I would need to be with him to get on and off base. He started in June. It seems like he is ready for a visit for family... lots of studying. He was in Coronado before, so this is change.

My son grated boot camp end of Oct and went to Monterey... he classed up in January and is learning Arabic... he is doing well and should be done next May! It was great to see him... we live in Wisconsin and this will be my only trip to visit him there. We flew into San Francisco as my brother lives there my daughter and I visited there and then drove to Monterey. It was great.

Jilreen...when did your son start DLI?
Comment by Sue F (Kirsten's mom) on August 5, 2009 at 4:02pm
Susan...your son can book you in the Navy Post-Grad school, the Army lodge (on the DLI campus) or the Navy Lodge midnight a week before you arrive. We had a backup reservation at a motel in Salinas (I think about 20 min away, but were able to cancel it (GoodNite inn) up to 24 hrs in advance. Let me know if u have other questions!

Hi Susan! When did your son start classes at DLI? My daughter is there, having started Persian mid July! We're leaving Friday am to drive down anbd be there a little over a week. I'd love to share experiences!

Hi Susan,

I just got back from visiting my son at DLI yesterday!! It was great! He only had a weekend for us and he did have watch but we had a great time. We had a great arabic meal, went sea Kayaking, did Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf!

We stayed at Navy Gateway Inn & Suites on the Postgraduate School Base just down the hill from DLI... it was beautiful and only cost $35.00 a night much cheaper than any other place I found in the area, it has free internet and cable tv frig in the room & microwave. we got the miliatry run around as my son didn't have us on the list in the required 48 hours in advance becasue the office closed everyday before he was done with work and all the numbers he was given to call didn't work... so as we got there we went to several places and everyone told us they didn't do that until one gate guard took pity on us and wrote up a personal pass for us and we had no problem after that getting in the base! It was a hoot being woken up to Reveille and the Star Spangled Banner each morning and Retreat and Taps at night.

It was cold most of the time while we were there....even though it was the begining of August so bring warm clothes! Lots of fun things including driving on Hwy 1 etc.

Hope this helps... have a great trip
