Thanks everyone for the welcome.

Colleen: So there is C school after A school? What exactly is C school, and is always in Texas for the CTR's?

I noticed several people on here have kids stationed in the Middle East. Does anyone know what the odds are of getting sent there after school?

Donna:
My son was also supposed to be aircrew and he also couldn't pass the level 2 swim test. My son also lost his enlistment bonus and will graduate this Friday as a CTR. He is an E2 right now. By the time he moved over to Corry Station from NAS it was about 2 months before he classed up for CTR. I felt the same way as you, that CTR is a better fit, but it is a bummer since they have so much potential and they have to meet the swim criteria in such a short amount of time. If you have any questions let me know! My son goes to San Angelo, TX for C school starting September 14th and then will be stationed in Hawaii. Maybe your son will end up there. :-)

Hi again Susan... it is a bit difficult to get the pass to get on and off the base but once one gets that worked out... it was easy for us... like I said we did get the run around since Alex was supposed to have it put in 48 hours in advance of us getting there and didn't because he couldn't get there on time (when they were open, and the phone numbers were wrong) but the gate gaurds did say that if we checked into the Navy Gateway they would then send a new list to the gate.... however the gate guards finally did right up the pass and we didn't have a problem getting on with Alex... just showed our pass and Id's... hope it all works out for you.

Hi everyone!! I'm so glad I found this site -- it has already answered a few questions. My son graduated from BC on July 24, and arrived in P-cola last week. He is going to be a CTR. Actually, his original contract was for Aircrew, but he wasn't able to pass the Level 2 Swim Qualification, so he had to be reclassified. In truth, I believe it was a blessing in disguise because I believe my son is better suited to a CTR job than an Aircrew job. The huge downside is that when he lost his old contract, he lost his signing bonus, and he lost his guaranteed E-4 rate upon completion of A-school. When he finishes A-school for CTR, he will still only be an E-1, and he is totally bummed out about that.

Does anyone know when the CTR classes will begin? He has heard anywhere from two months to four months.

Jilreen, My daughter was supposed to be in the Arabic class, but ended up in BC for 4.5 months instead of 8 weeks...closed fracture of her ankle. She was at Great Lakes, originally supposed to graduate April 24, but ended up graduating July 2nd.

Susan,
A week before we wanted to arrive, Kirsten called my cell phone from the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites on the Postgraduate School Base ($35/night for a single room with a queen bed, plus they can bring in a roll-away); that way I was able to guarantee the reservation with a credit card. I'd have a back-up, but a week should be ample time to cancel those reservations without penalty. The Navy Lodge (on Farragut Way) runs $76/night and is very nice...I stayed there when I brought down Kirsten's civilian clothes and laptop a few weeks ago. The Army lodge (on the DLI campus) runs about $65/night. All have the 1-week before checkin reservation policy for family members of the students. Good luck!

You all are so wonderul!! I am at work now so not able to check often online right now. I will have my son check the Navy Lodge.. I talked with him briefly and he thought it might be difficult because I would need to be with him to get on and off base. He started in June. It seems like he is ready for a visit for family... lots of studying. He was in Coronado before, so this is change.
