Hi everyone...my son is now in Pensacola..CTT. Looks like it might take a while to class up. Looks like his security clearance process started last Thursday, and continued today...does anyone have an approx. time it takes them to get their final clearance? Thanks for the great information on this site.

JB, just like everything else in the Navy, it based on the Navy's needs. The Navy can change the rules into their favor any time they want. However, if you know the rules prior to everything happening, then you can usually work it to your favor. It's all about "knowing the rules to play the game". That E3 needed a waiver to go to Hawaii.

that is too funny !!! enjoy your time..

JB's mom ~ I not sure what rate you sailor is, but what alot of people fail to realize is if your Sailor is married, and is E1 thru E3, then they cannot go to an overseas location, that includes Hawaii. However, it's base on the needs of the Navy. I know this all too well because a Sailor that I was helping on my website received orders to Japan. He was a E2 with a wife and 6mo child. The Navy told him "You're going to Japan for 2 years, but your family will not". Had he had financial problems, alcohol problems, beat his wife, then he would have stayed in the United States. However, since he was an outstanding sailor, they made him go to Japan. He served about 17 months in Japan without his wife and child. Luckily or Sadly, however you want to look at it, he was discharged for a different issue. He just came home last month. Man, the Navy really screwed over this family.
Here's the rule on married couples, pay attention to para Policy 1.b:

Dee, look at para 704 of the 1st link I post (about 5 down from here). What happens is everyone time is dated on the 16th of the month. The will be frocked until that date. The reason they do this is they don't want some CO to promote their guy 1 day early, just to have their guy senior to the guy that was promoted 1 day later. Example: Suppose I graded from CTM school on 7 July, and a CTN graduated July 8, then I would be senior that the other guy because I was promoted 1 day early. So everyone is promoted on the 16 of the month, then seniority is base on time in service, not time in rate (If you were promoted at the same time.
If you graduated after the 16th of the current month (ie July 17th), then your promotion date will be the next month, August 16th. So Dee, yes he will have to wait until the following month, he will be frocked until that time.
A easy way to tell if a sailor went to Captain's Mast is you can quickly see that their promotion date will be something other than the 16th....

Here is the offical instuction concerning advancements....You'll see at Para 202 (page 26) the TIR needed.
http://www.bupers.navy.mil/NR/rdonlyres/648D1DBD-58F2-4A73-9E07-8A2...

But understand CT's fall into a totally different category compared to the regular Navy. Read Para 10C here
http://www.bupers.navy.mil/NR/rdonlyres/0B098DCF-1709-4A05-8B34-C8C...
The big thing most people think is you must have a "A" school to advance to E4. That is not the case, you can also be a designed striker to compete for E4. Example, you have a Boatswain Mate (BM), who went into the Navy undesginated (no "A" school). They can put in and strike to be a BM, and the CO can approve them to take the E4 exam, but they never went to "A" school.

Karen, to explain the chart I will use the rating ABE since its directly under the meaning. Every 6 months Navy Times does this chart they put the blank column in the wrong spot. People have complain for years, but they never fix it. So E6's go all the way time you see "E5 Rating".
So on the far left side you will see: "E6 Rating", "Test Passers", "207 Quota", "207 OPP", "204 Quota", "204 OPP" THEN the E5's repeat....then the E4's....
So:
1. E6 Rating = ABE ABE is an aviation rating, just like a CTT is a Crypto rating
2. Test Passers = So for ABE 202 people took the test and passed the test. Just because you passed the test doesn't mean you will be advanced, it just means you passed test. Suppose you had a Sailor that does really good on test, but he looks like a dirt ball in uniform. His evals will reflect that he looks like crap in uniform and it will prevent him being advanced.
3. 207 Quota = So for ABE 27 is the number of people the Navy needs. They draw a line, those above the amount needed will be advanced, those below will not. So, you'll see ABE 202 took the test and passed, but the Navy only need 27. 207 is a test cycle number. Every test for every advancment cycle has a number. Think of it like a date code. So, 207 was that last test. The one previous was 204. They are not in order, and there is a reason for that, but you so new that until you know this part, you will never understand the next.
4. 207 OPP - For ABE you see 13.37%. This is the "opportunity" for those that took the test to make advancement. So only 13.37% actually got promoted.
5. 204 Quota - ABE is 22. So on the previous cycle the Navy needed 22 ABE's, this cycle they need 27, so it looks like Sailors are getting out of the ABE rating.
6. 204 OPP - ABE is 10.78%, so only 10.78% of the sailors that took the test were advanced on the cycle before the 207 cycle.
You would continue on to the E5's then to the E4's....
So now look at CTI(4) for E5's. So for Korean linguist (4), they had 31 sailors take the test and only 1 was advanced. That's only 3.23%. They happen to have the same percentage for the 204 cycle too. Man, 3.23% means you need to start looking for another job. You want to be in a group that at least has a 40% chance.
Does that make sence to you guys?
Be careful looking at the chart, about 1/2 down the columns for the rating shift (they are not on the same line)...

Woo-hoo, got "The Box" today. What I found funny was we told Alex to just wear throw-away clothes and shoes that way he wouldn't have to encure the cost of shipping back unless clothes. So here the 12 inch x 12 inch box comes. All that was in it was his cell phone and battery. It wasn't bubble wrapped nor packed in any type of protection. I guess BC only uses one type of box, I would be funny to see if someone sent nail clippers home if it would be in a 12x12 box.....
