Navymom4J - so nice you have your son home for the weekend. Will be interested to know if you get any info re their leave and move to San Diego. Mine is supposed to be in San Diego by October 15th! He doesn't have any idea yet either re the plans!
Comment by navymom3 on September 2, 2011 at 12:03pm
I am sure he can find what he wants there. His brothers are already making a list of car parts they want him to but and send back home. They are both car guys. Not sure why it missed him. Said he had better things to do with his money than waste it on a car. LOL

Cars in Japan are really, really cheap.  He doesn't want, nor can he bring on if its newer than 1976.  Have his just get one there.

The only exception if it's a classic (older than 1976).  He will have a headache if he tries to bring a newer one.  And, he better have lots of $$$$$ ready because they will quarantine the car.  He would have to pay $$$$$$ in storage cost.  So don't attempt to do it.

Craig thanks very much. i will read over everything. That is helpful. He is not real car savey so was hoping we could help him get one before he goes.

Navymom4J~ so glad your sailor made it home safely. We decided not to go visit P'cola. Son has a sinus infection and with the rain and rip currents we just scratched it. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

navymom - He can't ship a car to Japan if it's newer than 1976 due to the embargo.

I actually posted something about this in this section on August 20, 2011 at 11:53am.  I went ahead and made a "pages" for it, because I know others will ask.  Pages is located under the members pictures above.

To me, I'd ask the sponsor how much 1957 Chevy go for there.  You can pick them up cheap here in the states, and I know some Japanese guy would go crazy having one.

When I went to Guam, my sponsor recommended that I buy a nice pick-up truck because the Guamanian loved them.  I didn't, but I wished I did.  They pay a fortune for them.

Karen - Glad to have you onboard.  Make dang sure you join the CTI group too.

Hi all! My son is starting his fifth week of boot camp and is due to PIR 9/30 and then go to Monterey for CTI.  Just looking for info as to what to expect for him.
Comment by navymom3 on September 2, 2011 at 9:15am

Thanks Craig and Dee.

Craig he does not have a car right now except the one of our he is using. He was going to get one once he gets there I think. Unless it would be cheaper to get one here and have it shipped. What do you think would be the best. I know he could probably go without a car but he has now gotten used to having one. Any info would be great. Also what does he do about housing all the info I see is on family housing and he is single.

Son made it home! I won't want to let him go come Monday- LOL. He ships to San Diego October 18th- but will have some leave to come home before then too I think. Now I am going to revisit all the conversations previously about how all of this works with getting their stuff moved - and flying home before flying to duty station. When I asked him he had no idea yet! I know with all of the info here I can seem somewhat intelligent to him - he will be amazed! LOL

Craig- good luck to your son's passing! I just know he did!

My son basically told me that he will probably not make the promotion lol! He said they hurried up and did his package for him and it looked like crap and he is never on base anymore and no one he knows made it first time around lol. I asked if he can study for it and he said, probably not much, he will only come back for the day to take it. Oh well, it seems to me like he just sewed on E4 anyway but if they don't make it does that mean they have to wait a year to take it again? It is amazing what all goes into what they have to present for advancement. Good luck to your son Craig!  Thanksgiving will be here before you know it!  I am already mourning the end of summer!
