100628-N-6720T-168 PACIFIC OCEAN (June 28, 2010) The guided-missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 85) fires an MK 45 five-inch gun during a live-fire exercise. The MK 45 gun is a fully-automatic naval gun capable of providing accurate naval gunfire against fast, highly-maneuverable surface targets, air threats and shore batteries. Curtis Wilbur is assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15, part of the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed naval force and is underway supporting security and stability in the western Pacific Ocean. Regina, thanks for posting this. Our daughter is with us for a couple of weeks and she is an Army wife so she has her military id card, think we might go take advantage of this offer and get out of the HEAT!!!

Thanks Steph, that is what I was missing. Yes he is helicopter squadron. He just got back to NAS and had to go right back out again, however I am not sure which ship he is attacthed to this time. I know he had a blast on the destroyer and enjoyed it much more than the aircraft carrier he went on before. He said they are a much smaller crew than on the carrier and he felt like people got to know each other better.
Comment by Mary, Proud Mom of Nick on June 15, 2010 at 8:32am
Steph, thanks for explaining that. Sounds like a great opportunity for them to have some diversity and see other ships and locations.
Comment by Steph on June 14, 2010 at 2:04pm
dre5085, judging by your picture, I'm guessing that your son is part of a helicopter squadron. When a destroyer goes out on deployment, they take with them a small air crew. Most destroyers are equipped with the hangar bays and berthing space to take the crew and aircraft with them for the majority of the deployment, so that crew is attached to that ship for the time they are out. Once they get back, the air crew leave the ship, and go back to the Naval Air Station where their squadron is. The next time he leaves, he may be part of a larger crew that is attached to a larger ship like a carrier or an amphibious ship.

Also, I should explain that he is a rescue swimmer. I am thinking he is not on these ships like the usual crew member.
