Karla, I will try to get some clarification for you when we talk to Nick. I know the lines to use the phones can be long at times. He would generally call when he was finishing a late night watch - which worked well due to the time difference. We were able to average about a phone call a week while they were deployed. It sure makes deployments so much more bearable than the days when I was a Navy wife!

Laura, don't be sad when he heads out for his first deployment. It's quite an adventure for them and something he has been training for. Hopefully he will get to see a great port or two. Enjoy having your daughter and grandbaby at home and think about going to the homecoming - those are much more fun than goodbyes!

Welcome Sherry! February will be here before you know it, is this your son's first ship?

Karla, I believe your son is giving you good information. When Nick calls from his ship regardless of where the ship is - the caller id always has a Hawaii phone number - his homeport.

Laura, you would think with today's technology you should be able to order more photos. The photos come in a large white envelope and there was a phone # on the package. I will look to see if I still have the envelope. If you are on facebook, RTC has a page and they are now posting PIR photos, etc. You might be able to ask there if you can still get photos.

Found a photo of my favorite destroyer today!
101113-N-3666S-097 PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 13, 2010) The guided-missile destroyers USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60) and USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) perform shipboard maneuvers during exercise Koa Kai off the coast of the Hawaiian Islands. Koa Kai is the primary integrated training event for mid-Pacific surface combatant units. Koa Kai encompasses Hawaii-based surface, submarine and aviation assets, and other commands within the Hawaii region. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication 2nd Class Robert Stirrup/Released)

The USS Wayne E. Meyer pulled back into San Diego today. I just wanted to share my pictures with all. I was in the right spot at the right time. My fiance is on the USS Ronald Reagan, but here you go!

The family day on the Fitzgerald was just great!! When we first came aboard the command wanted to make sure we, the family members, knew that this day was for us and to thank us for all the support we give our loved ones and the ship. No area of the ship was off limits so we saw engineering, the pilothouse, the “war” room, the mess hall, wardroom and all the ammunitions and guns. The sailors did a demonstration of the fire hose and then let the family members try the fire hose. All the fire fighting equipment was laid out and we could try it on, too. It was fun watching the kids get into the gear. We also got to watch as the sailors fired two different guns. The 5inch gun was really loud! Even with earplugs my ears rang when that gun was fired. The sailors fired it five times and it was amazing to watch.
The 25-millimeter machine gun was fired by remote control and it could fire at close range, medium range and long range. You could see the tracers as it fired. We were very impressed at the attentiveness and professionalism of the crew during these live demonstrations. We had a steel beach picnic (deck of the ship) with some great food-ribs, burgers, hot dogs, and to top it off an ice cream social. As we traveled back to base, we were amazed at the ship traffic that the Fitz had to navigate through. This included the big container tankers, small pleasure crafts, and fishing boats. The crew of the ship had to determine where each of these ships were heading so they could navigate around them. It was something to watch. To top off a wonderful day, my husband and I were touched when Captain Velez presented us one of his command coins for traveling the longest distance. Our son explained that this was quite an honor since these coins aren’t given out lightly (he doesn’t have one but we do now). All in all, this day helped us see what our son does and how important all our sailors are to the defense of our country. (I will try to post some pictures to my home page, too).

Hello, thanks for the good Christmas ideas! I have also thought about the navy blankets and good idea on family pic mugs.
