Well, hello again navy wives! So he got his orders the other day and he goes to Bahrain for 2 years... My worst nightmare became a reality the other day.How many days of leave after A school for Master At Arms do you think he will get since he is going over seas? I know I have to stay positive for him to succeed, so I am trying! The thing that worries me most is the location, not the distance. I hear that he won't live on the navy base because the barracks are all full because there are so many of them stationed there. So will he be located somewhere safe near the base? How is he supposed to get transportation everyday for two years if he doesn't live on base? When can I go up there with him? We have changed our wedding date many times... He is supposed to graduate A School March 27th, so we changed our wedding date to March 29th that way he can get married before he goes to Bahrain. I will be taking my ASVAB soon and enlisting after I take the test. Will they let me get my sea tour over with in the beginning so that we can both knock that out and then hopefully be stationed together state side once our tours are up? Any other information or advice on Bahrain and the situation would be tremendously helpful!

Thanks,

a future navy wife

As far as I know, most sailors live offbase in Bahrain.

Here is the FB group, I bet they will help with details.

He should request a sponsor as soon as he can, and a welcome aboard packet.  That will provide details about living there.

Once you take the ASVAB and know what you qualify for, then you can figure out sea~shore.  However, many ratings begin with a sea tour, so that is favorable for you.  This may make spouse co-lo work better for you in the long run, although you are going to have a couple years to tough out.  You can do it!

How many leave days does he have on the books?  Did he take Christmas stand down, or was he in boot camp then?  Usually a week to ten days after A school, unless he used it all up over the holidays.  They earn 2.5 days each month.

I am hoping for Hospital Corpsman or MA. He graduated bootcamp January 30th 2015. He hasn't taken any leave days yet. Does he have to request to take leave before he reports to Bahrain? I just want to make sure that he will have leave before he leaves. I know it's probably going to suck for the next 3 or 4 years because he is over seas and I have no idea when or how long I would have to go over seas. I hope the next couple of years fly by fast because I have no idea how I am supposed to go 2 years or even more without living with him... He is an e2 and hopeuflly will be an e4 sometime next year, I don't really know if that will even help. Do you think it's a good thing he is stationed over seas first? Do you think it will help us be stationed together later on?

When he gets his orders, he will have the chance to request leave concurrent with travel. He should have at ten days leave on the books by then.  So you will get some time together.

Okay, Bahrain for two years ... during that time, you will go through DEP, boot camp, and training.  Then you have to go to your duty station.  By then he will be nearing the end of his tour.  Nothing says you will go overseas too!   Both of you can put in your co-location requests  after you have been at your first command for 12 months. So he would get new orders somewhere, and if possible, they will give you new orders to the same location. Once he is an E-4, it is always better.

From experience, I think it will only suck for a couple years at most.  Not three or four. I was apart from my husband the first two years we were married, we did get some visits, so it is not impossible!

I would still be cautious of MA as your choice of rating though.   Also, apply for a passport NOW!  Never know what will happen, you might get to travel for a visit!

Hi Reana!!

My boyfriend is also an MA and has been there for over 8 months now. After this command he will be there for another year (2 total) however, he will mostly be out to sea through the second year.

As far as living I can give you a little detail, he got a really nice place with a couple bedrooms and a maid!! They furnish everything and your Sailor can even barter for things in his lease. i.e. Mine asked for a crockpot and a printer lol. When they are off base they have a curfew that they must be in by... I'm not sure how its regulated, but that is just what he told me. There is also a rule that only so many Americans can occupy a building at once. -also for safety.

For transportation, the first few weeks he carpooled with a few other people. He also got a bike and continues to bike to work, or occasionally will run. -he made sure he was close enough to base to do so. I'm not sure about his situation but the Navy will pay for your car to be shipped over. He wasn't going to do this at first and was gonna leave his car with me, but many other Sailors did, so he made a POA and I sent his car over. They have strict custom guidelines there, so he will need to look into that. From what my boyfriend said gas is like 98 cents a gallon and its crazy cheap to get mechanic work done (which was one of the reasons he wanted to do it haha)

If you have any other questions feel free to ask or send me a message!! :-)

Thank you all so much for your help! Wow, so maybe he should even by a car while he is there. I hope he is located somewhere close to the base so that he can maybe ride a bike to work. Does it matter how long I visit him for? When I do go and visit him can I stay where he is living?

If he is renting an apartment, you could stay there.  For how long would be up to the tourist visa Bahrain would issue, and IF the Navy would allow you to travel there.  I haven't looked it up, but once you join the Navy, they say when and where you travel, even if you take leave. Going on overseas visits always requires specific permission.

As far as a car goes, I know driving there is insane.  There is probably a shuttle bus for the base.  I would have him ask his sponsor just how that works.  I don't think they get to own cars there, and bikes are not safe.

Okay, thank you! I had another question, can he have his Verizon phone there? Will he still be able to use their service? How do we make it so it doesn't charge so much to text/call over seas? He just got a plan last month and I'm also on it.

No, it will not work there.  He can suspend his phone and his portion of his service until he returns.  I know how it works in Japan, they get a cheap local phone, then use an app like Viber for free texting.  Calls can be through Vonage or magic jack for cheap.  This is a question he needs to ask a sponsor who is there!

what is his job to go over there?
