I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to expect once I have the baby in September.  Is there paperwork that we will need to fill out so that our daughter can be on his orders since we arent married yet?  He is at RIMPAC until shortly before I have her and I just dont know how it works. She will be on my health insurance as well so im not too worried about that aspect of it I just dont really know how the Navy takes it when you have a baby but arent married...

Any advice would really help... or even if you have experienced it yourself it would be really helpful to know how it all went.  We were expecting to get married 7/3 but the Navy sure changed that plan for us... now im not too sure when we will be able to get hitched.

Also... since he already has his orders and is signed till 2019 what happens when we do get married?  Do I just get added to his next orders or is it possible to get added once we get married?

Thanks everyone!

Since your not married you would have to show proof that the child is biology his meaning a peternity test. Also he would have to have 100% custody for th child to be on the orders. Get married even if it's in front of a judge. You can plan your big wedding later it's not worth the headache. The hoops we had to do was stupid we just got married at the courthouse we will have a real wedding later.

Thank you! I dont think we will have time to even get married in front of a judge because of him being gone and him even filing the paperwork once we are married probably takes a while right?   but as long as I have her on my insurance thats really the only thing that really matters. I was just wondering what would happen in our case. Thanks so much for the information I appreciate it. I know that if we just get married in front of a judge we will never have a real wedding.

Filing the paperwork takes ONE WORKING DAY. She could be his dependent on paper the day after she was born if he had the birth certificate and access to Personnel.  Same with your marriage.

Once she is his dependent, your insurance will be the primary, and Tricare will be the secondary.  In the long run, this will cost you money, as Tricare has no premiums, and very low co-pays.  Please do research on insurance.

Unless he has full physical custody, your child will not be on his orders if he is single.

The Navy rarely "adds" a dependent to orders which are already issued.  Basically, that means you pay for your travel to his new command.  Yes, it would be the next set of orders.

"Real wedding"?  Once you have a baby, all that money will go toward them.  Do not delay getting married because you want a pretty dress and a party.  There is a lot more to being a military dependent than accompanied orders and insurance, there is his ability to live offbase and be paid for it, and your access to him as a spouse.  Sorry, I am more practical about marriage than about weddings.  It can be a difficult dream to let go, but you're in a new world now.

Thank you! We actually already are living off base together... and its paid for.  It is a relief to know that it only takes one day. I was thinking it would take a lot longer since everything else there takes so long.  I work as well and combined we make pretty good money so I do not feel like our child would lack any benefits with having an actual wedding... even if it was small. I have pretty much gotten rid of any dreams of what a relationship/marriage/pregnancy would be like since he cant really be here for any of it anyway.  In my heart I know what marriage is and it does not = a wedding. My insurance is really good because I work for a hospital and I already have a dependent so my premium will not change once she is added.  Thanks for the info!

Anti M we got married in the courthouse with no one there. We are having our real wedding in our eyes this fall with family and friends with the church. That's what I Ment.
