So, my husband just got new orders for Sea Wiz C-school in San Diego. Counting hold time we should be there close to a year if not longer. Luckily I have a few months to plan. I was wondering what would be best for the living situation. We currently live in an apartment off base in IL and the extra BAH is defiantly helpful. So I'm looking for an apartment/town house/house in San Diego. Can anyone shed some light on a few good locations to look? We want to be in the safest area that we can afford and close enough to base, obviously. I don't know much about on base housing... is it worth not getting the BAH? Any other information would be much appreciated. I am open to any and all information that is thrown my way!

Thanks so much!

We just moved to San Diego yesterday. We live in military housing (River Place), and it doesn't take full BAH, several of the Lincoln communities are under BAH. I would check out the Lincoln Military housing website to find out which ones don't take it all. It's totally worth it, in my opinion, to live in a military community. The only areas I have been told to stay away from are the areas directly next to 32nd street base, I've heard they aren't the most friendly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

I've done Shore Patrol next to 32nd st (National City area).  Yeah, I did not enjoy that at all.

We lived in Birdland, which is a tiny neighborhood between Linda Vista and Serra Mesa, overlooking MIssion Valley.  I considered housing, but we had three cats and nothing was open for us.  We had a nice little condo with our own garage.  But I was impressed with the various housing neighborhoods, they looked good.

We had to have drinking water delivered because the tap water made me ill.

Hi Eva!

I'm actually a Real Estate agent in San Diego, so hopefully I can be of some help for you and your husband!

Do you all have children and need to be in a good school district?

My husband is stationed in Coronado, and we live in Pacific Beach. It was about a 20 min drive for him, but the location is very fun and great for our interests. We are constantly running along the bay / beach, or riding our beach cruisers on the weekend. There are plenty of fun restaurants and bars to enjoy! All of his guy friends usually come to our place first and we all go our from there! Its great! Rents are pretty affordable here. You can definitely rent a 1 bedroom for about $1200-1300 or even get a 2 bedroom for $1500.

You can also live downtown to be a bit closer, but that is definitely "city" living. There are great restaurants and bars also, but traffic and parking will be something to consider. Rents are a little higher downtown as well.

A lot of couples also live in Imperial Beach. They are close to work by taking the Silver Strand. It is definitely much closer to the border, and you will see that, living there. (If you catch my drift) You do have great beach access.. but you would probably spend most of your time driving into Coronado to enjoy those restaurants and shopping.

Let me know if you have any more questions or if I can be of any help!

We lived in SD (Coronado) for 3 years....its amazing and beautiful, and there is definitely a community for everyone.  I would recommend military housing when you first move there, and then you can feel it out when you get there if you like living through Lincoln or want to rent something else.

The 3 most expensive communities in SD are Coronado, Point Loma, and La Jolla.  I worked in La Jolla and the real estate there is VERY high.  A lot of people I worked with lived in Mira Mesa, just a little ways East.  There are so many nice communities depending on what you like/what you are looking for.  Hillcrest is beautiful and its the LGBT area.  A lot of people like North Park and Normal Heights as well...PB (Pacific Beach) and OB (Ocean Beach) are also great places (PB is known for partying and OB is an awesome laid-back CA surfing/beach vibe)....for a big city, SD has a LOT of very nice areas and not too many bad ones.

And FYI Pismo Beach is nowhere near SD, its way up North by SLO so definitely don't look there!

Do you know which base he will be at?  Imperial Beach has very affordable housing.  If it's just the two of you, i'd recommend not doing mil housing.  The best you'll get is about $1500/month for a two bedroom.  BAH is around $2000 for junior enlisted.  You can do way better in civilian housing.  If you have kids or a large dog, mil housing may be the better option.  I'm in San Diego now, feel free to ask whatever.

Thank you guys for all of your helpful information! We've decided on civilian housing. I can't decide if we want to be closer to the city or somewhere like Imperial Beach or Pacific Beach. Its so hard to decide when you aren't there! Its just the two of us, we have a dog but he's only about 24 lbs he should only grow to be 30-35. We had to rush with our last move and I wasn't terribly happy with our location, so I want to get this one right! haha
