We are hoping that my grandson gets to come home for the holidays also.  He has been in Groton since May 6 and we have not seen him since then.

Laney - my grandson also has a 9 month old daughter that he has not seen so it would be wonderful if he could be here for Christmas.  he has put in for leave so we are waiting to hear.

My husband graduates from BC next Friday so he'll be very new to BESS by the time the holidays come. Best situation would be he gets leave and can fly here to Utah for Christmas, otherwise I probably won't see him. We have a 9 month old and that is too long of a flight for us.

I agree with Subby'sGirl....there is really not much to do in Groton, but if you have time there are places around to see.  Providence, RI is approx. 1 hour (5 story shopping mall), Boston is approx. 2 hours (USS CONSTITUTION museum), and NYC is approx 3 hours.  I am saying approx. because it depends on the weather conditions.  I was just there at the end of October, and almost got trapped, I am from Texas and not use to driving in snow and ice.  Alot of things close early in Groton. I spent alot of time on base with my son this last trip, it was more of a hang out trip than sight seeing.  We went bowling on base, and next door to the bowling alley is a pub that has karoke on Saturday night. No matter what you do, you will have a good time seeing your son.

As always, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll start making my plans for my December 15th Road Trip and itinerary for this weekend.

@ Shekiamf.. This thee Museum is good place to start.. The graduation is really cool  is alot more intimate than PIR.. And they encourage to take lots of pics.. Thats when they become SUBMARINERS so yes I think is worth the trip :).. As to what to do around here to be honest there isnt much.. But Mystic is really pretty and so is the Mystic Seaport..

Hey ladies.. I know they had to put in their leave paper work in about 2 weeks ago for holiday leave.. School will be close for about 2 weeks I think and they will only have 3 duty sections as oppose to 6 so some will have to stay :( .. I know most of the moms are worry about their sailors being away from home during the holidays but this should make u feel a bit better, a lot of families here including my self are part of the adopt a sailor program hell I adopted like 6 not including my hubby..lol.. SO no matter what they will be part of the family :)..

We're going to Groton this weekend for my first visit with my son.  I haven't seen him since his PIR on 10/07. But it sure is nice to talk or text w/him pretty much daily.  He expects to graduate from BESS on 12/15 and then have leave (he hopes) until after the 1st of the year. After this weekend's trip up to Groton we'll decide if we're going to make another trip up for Thanksgiving. We'll be staying in the Navy Lodge this weekend. Ladies, I have a few questions that I'm hoping some of you may be able to help with.... 1) Is the BESS Graduation a significant enough ceremony to make the trip (5+ hour drive one way)? 2) Are their must sees / dos while there? We're planning on a tour of the base, the Submarine Museum, not sure what else.  Thanks for your input!!
