ribly....I hope I dont sound like a "know it all", they would have to pay for a taxi to the airport, and both of them are approx. an hour away, Providence is the easiest one to get to.  The base does offer a shuttle to and from the airport, but your Sailor will have to make arrangements.  Also, the Sub School will be on "Holiday Standdown" from 12/16 thru 1/2 or 1/3, they will be allowed to go home for the holidays, but still have to submit a Leave Chit.  I was just there last week and my son and I discussed all this stuff.

Thanks for the info tackijacky, Does any one know is there any type of public transportation from the base to the airport? I have heard the base closes down over christmas. Does that mean we can fly our guys home? or will they have various watch duties during that time?

I was wrong.  Talked to my son last night and his school started yesterday.  He is in really good spirits and said it is better than he thought it would be and SOOOOO much different from Boot Camp!  He has two roommates, one he flew in with and someone he hadn't met before.  It was so good hearing from him and knowing he is doing well.  He also said that there are about 50 in his daily class.

Just got back from Groton, last night....they did get some snow on Saturday, but wasnt suppose to get in worse for the Groton area.

I think I saw a post on here at some point asking about the "Adopt a Sailor" program for Thanksgiving.  I was at the Liberty building with my son, and there is a form there for them to fill out for them and a buddy.  You may want to pass this around to your Sailors.  They will have to fill out at Liberty hall.

We went to the "Pub" on base Saturday night, and my son and a few of his buddies sang karoke, had a really good time.  There is also a bowling alley next door to the Pub.  There is really not much for them to do in the Groton area, my son has his car, and still manages to get "bored".

ribly....you may want to start getting a little box together for him, the stuff at the NEX is still fairly expensive (as everything in the area is) they just dont have to pay tax on the items.  They will need cleaning supplies and laundry soap.  I also send non perishable foods, they can store in their food locker, cookies, beef jerky, chips, favorite candy.  They have a little tiny (hotel size) fridge/freezer, and a microwave.  My sons biggest request is cookies, microwave popcorn and beef jerky (good for bargaining with).  Also, while there I noticed there are an awful lot of Domino's pizza delivery, you may want to send them gift cards for Subway and Dominos.

diana my son went to groton after 10/28 PIR too. I wonder if they could be roomates? Mine says there are 3 in the room but one is set to leave soon. The other one flew with him on saturday.

He says there is snow there but not too much. We are used to snow especially after last year. 2010 and early 2011 was very snowy and icy here in south central Ilinois.

I will have to ask my boy if his roomates mom's name is diana the next time I talk to him. He said they went to the NEX to get supplies Saturday after they got in. He says it is weird to shop for themselves since everything was supplied for them in BC.

My son's PIR was 10-28.  He is in CT now, says there is lots of snow (we are about 20 miles from Galveston, TX so this is new to him!) and that he is getting settled in,has two roommates and that his room is like a dorm.  He sounds pretty good so far.  I think his BESS school starts on 11-7.

I haven't heard from my boyfriend yet. I was unable to take his cell phone or laptop, but his mother said that she will send them as soon as we get a address. He got there Saturday sometime. I know that it snowed up there. I just wanted to know if anyone else that thier sailor PIR 10-28 and went to CT. If they have heard from them yet or anything. Thanks:)

Missing - they can take any electronic they want to Groton, you just have to meet them at the airport to give it to them and they must be in a plain black backpack.
