Kris, We were just there for our son's graduation fron BESS 10/7.  He took us around the base and he can treat you to one of the hot dogs in the NEX.  They are so good and the buns are wonderful.  We had one called the German Shepherd that had sauerkraut and mustard.  They all have different names.  They have a contest going on for who can eat the most hot dogs there on base.  Don't forget to get one of there chocolate chip cookies, soooo good.  The NEX also is like a shopping mall and the clothing (and Vera Bradley purses) are all less than the marked price and no tax.  We took our son out to eat in Mystic ( about 8 miles from the base) .  We ate at S & P Oyster CO. ( 1 Hollmes St. Mystic). It was an hour wait, but so worth the wait. It was a holiday weekend though (Columbus Day).  We sat outside by the water to eat, such a great atmosphere.  Also in Mystic is Mystic Pizza from the movie with Julia Roberts. They have the movie running in the restautant.  Another nice place is the Boathouse (8 Coogan Blvd. Mystic).   If you go online to restaurant.com you can get a gift certificate for $25.00 ( I paid only $3.00 for the certificate at that time) for a place called the Cove Clamshack (20 Old Stonington Rd. Stonington, CT) It is not fancy, but the food is great and fresh.  It is a small blue building with a lot of picnic tables outside, but they have inside seating also.  You order outside and they bring it in to you.  However you have to go outside to use the restroom.  We were there for a weeking camping near the base.  We love CT, can't wait to go back.  Our son is there for a year or more.  He is in ATT now.

We went to Paul's Pasta following A school graduation and saw several other Navy families there. They had yummy Italian food and seafood was available too. This was my son's first choice. The prices there were VERY reasonable I thought.

Hi Ladies... I'm going to Groton tomorrow to bring my son his laptop and phone... Im so excited to see him.. He graduated bc on the 14th already it seems like forever since i saw him!  Anyway, do any of you know of a good restaurant near by we can go to??  He said he was going to  treat us, but i dont think we will let him... its nice he offered though!!  Is there anything i can pick up for your sailors? Like favorite candy or anything like that? hmmm are they allowed candy now??

Yes, but I could not find any pictures either. They made reference on their order page to people wanting to copy their design. So I assume they are not letting people see it. You can read some of the comments from the people who have them and they seem happy. I think I will wait until my son actually gets on the sub and see what he says. There were several comments too about "hot racks" which I am pretty sure are when they have to share a rack.

To those of us who have JUST had our boys leave Groton, and those of you who will eventually have your sons move on. I found a sub moms group that has a lot of information. Also, everyone needs to find out about rack packs for the kids' berths. Info at navyrackpacks.com

Kathy - If there isn't something set up for them do you know whether we would be allowed to send food items to them??  I'm not sure if it would be allowed since my son will have only been there not even a month.
