Gayle,
My sailor was there for Fleet Weekend this past spring and you are right...NYC loves our sailors! They rolled out the red carpet for them! Everything was free and they were taken to the front of the line for everything including the Empire State Building! People were shaking their hands and a little boy wanted to know if he was "a real sailor?" That really touched my son and he gave him one of his coins that they get! Glad your sailor got to take advantage of that trip!

Hi everyone,
300 submariners were bused to NY city today for a walk with the USO? They were allowed 4 hours of free time afterwards and many went to Times Square etc. My son got in as much as he could see. He said he felt very safe as there was security everywhere. What a time to be there. Every corner something was going on. They ran into a parade too. NYorkers were very good to our sailors.
suems2, my son has been in Groton since 7/30. We went to visit him 8/30. They have a lot more priviledges there than in bootcamp. He really enjoys what he is learning. He has duty every 6 days and may not leave base on those days. The day we were there he called us after class about 4 PM. He was finishing up his wash and then met us at the main gate. If he is in the car with you, you may drive around the base. we needed our car registration and a drivers licence for identificatin to drive on base with him. We brought some things for him and my husband was able to go into his building as see his room. We drove around the base then and he showed us their food hall, the 2 churches, movie theatre, their paintball field and there is a sub that you can go in, but we were there too late to schedule a tour and we were leaving the next morning. We took him out to eat at a place he found that was popular in the area near the water. He was able to be out until 10 PM and could wear his own clothing. They can be out on base after 10PM, but they have to be in uniform. He graduates from sub school Oct. 7th and then has more classes there in Groton for about a year. It is a very nice area. We went to the information center near Mystic and did some walking around there while he was in class. We ate at Mystic Pizza (from the movie) for lunch. You can ask any specific questions you may have.
Hi all! Haven't left a comment for a while but have been keeping up with all your news! My son just passed his TECNO final! That is a huge relief as, unfortunately, many didn't make it through. He starts A school for FT Sub on Monday.
Proudnavy mom: FT sub school is only 18 weeks. He may be looking at the time for all the schools combined(BESS, ATT, TECNO and A school). That is around 9 months long. Our son has been there for 5 1/2 months now and will be there for 4 1/2 more months with A school.
