Merlin80:  Congrats on your son making it home!!!  Don't you love it when things all come together!

Jeffsmom1380:  Congratulations to you & your son as well!  My son will be in FT school (after he gets into TECNO) and he just found out last week that FT school is 9 MONTHS!  We thought the military websites said 4-1/2 months.  He's pretty bummed about being up there so much longer.  I don't blame him; I am too but if he's allowed to come home around Christmas I won't care quite as much ;-)

My son has a big final today for A school!  He graduates Sept 15th!  He has received his official orders yet but tentatively, it is Norfolk!

Anyone visiting your sailor in Groton I would highly recommend Abbotts for casual CT seafood eating - http://www.abbotts-lobster.com/index.html.   We took our son there on Sunday and the food was excellent and it was beautiful to eat outside at the harbor.    We drove through the village of Mystic but did not stay due to time constraints.    It was a joy to all be together - we also toured the sub at the museum on base, toured the base, and went to historicFort Griswold.   WE brought him up to his grandparents house for the day too so we could all just relax together.     We loved being in Groton and having a wonderful family Labor Day weekend  trip together.   Cherishing the moments - once he is out to sea they will be few and far between.

marinamamma...i hear you about travel and the cost....Luckily for us, we were able to drive to the PIR graduation. I live in Minnesota, so the drive to chicago was not that costly...We got a great deal on airfare to Groton. Could not pass on it. This will be a mini vacation for us. Has been years since i have been on a plane....i like the ground much better..PIR is the big event, i say that because its the only event i have been to so far. Yes you are correct about bringing dogs, not a place to bring them...enjoy your day with your sailor!!!!! :)

Lynnvikings....we stayed at the Ramada Inn on Gold Star Hwy...there is a small Walmart across the street, Five Guys burgers...and kind of centrally located, if you stay 3 or more days you will get 20% off.  I highly recommend the resteraunt called "99" it has a wide variety.  Also a must, you have to go to Mystic, and eat at Mystic Pizza and stroll thru the shops.  Hopefully, I will be going back at the end of October for my son's 20th birthday

Lynnvikings...I would highly recommend the Navy Lodge 1-800-NAVY-INN! The rooms are beautiful and clean with little kitchenettes! In a nice area too. I've stayed in other places out there and unless you get out of Groton they tend to be pretty dirty and run down. In addition, you can't beat the price of the Navy Lodge. It is only 1 mile from base!

Since I only live 3 hours from Groton I was able to attend BESS and I loved it! Very intimate and fun to see his friends from Great Lakes and meet his new buddies. I took pictures for some of the other N4M's who lived too far away to make it and got to meet some of the N4Ms who were able to go!

It is also great to see the base and the area where our sailors will be spending quite a bit of time!

Good luck and have fun!

Penny

lynnvikings,

Boy they need to make me director of Sailor plane ticketing...I'd have all the sailors leaving at 5 p.m. Sunday so they could see their parents, wives and girlfriends Fri and Sat!

I would love to go to the meet and greet but our plane, if we fly will not get there until very late. My husband has come up with the idea of "hey let's take the 2 dogs because he would love to see them, so we will drive!" And I am "nope, no time to take of dogs at PIR, not changing motels, just want to spend every minute with our Sailor.

So is Bess graduation as big of a deal, we cannot afford all these plane tickets and motels!
