Marinamamma.....the cell phone and laptop can be giving to your sailor at the airport. He has to have that in a black bag, be it a back pack or carry on bag. Can not have logo's on it. We bought our son a back pack the day of graduation at the navy exchange. We even bought him his computer at best buy on Friday after his graduation...Trust me the day of graduation was such a blurrrrrrrrrr.......went way too fast....enjoy your day with him

marinamamma...Yes, my hubby and i only had Friday . We dropped him off at the base at about 6:30 pm on Friday night. We stayed up all day friday and friday night. We had to be at ohara by 2:00 am so we could meet the navy buses coming from the base with the sailors who were flying out on saturday morning. Our son was heading to Groton for Submarine training. Some sailors did not leave until sunday, so some had time with their sailors in great lake on saturday. But i believe if your son is going to Groton, he will probably fly out saturday morning.

Thank you for answering me. So all the time you had was just Friday and poof he was gone Sat? So not fair! Was so hoping it would be until Sun. but that is better than nothing when it's been 2 months!

Thank God Irene turned out to be just a storm with a bad attitude in Groton.  My heart and thoughts go out to those on the East Coast who lost family, homes, etc.

At least I knew my son was safe; we stayed home for Hurricane Katrina in 2005 so I knew anything Irene had was going to be less than what he experienced then.  Thank God everyone at BESS is safe!

yes they can have laptop and cell phones....you will have to meet your son at the airport on the day he leaves for groton, i did with my son. He graduated from bc on 7/22 and went to groton on 7/23..if you meet your son at the ticket counter you will get a gate pass and be able to hang with him until his flight leaves....

Hi Ladies,

My son will PIR 9-23-11 and will be headed to BESS. I know they are allowed their cellphone (?-correct or not) but are they allowed their laptop there? I don't have any idea if they let them use it at BESS, ATT or TCNO before A school. Thanks for any info.

I talked to my grandson earlier today and he said the hurricane "was nothing".  He said our Arizona monsoon storms are worse then what the hurricane was there in Groton.  He told me when I talked to him before the storm hit that he was suppose to graduate Friday from ATT school but did not get to since they were making sandbags and such.  Well today he was back in class and graduated, now he is in holding until TECHNO school starts, so it sounds like all is back to normal for him.

Prayers are with all od those that did not fare that well from Irene.

It sounds like clean up is continuing all over...flooding is the major concern...I know we got our power back on at 4:30 this morning. Haven't heard from my sailor yet today...I imagine he was busy with clean up.

Sounds pretty mild of a storm up in CT as compared to down here in VA.  We are still without power and from the looks of all the trees and wires down in our area we will be out for quite a while.   No matter - in 3 days we'll be heading up to CT, staying with my parents in Cromwell and driving to Groton to visit with my son.  He just sent a link of a fun History event to attend - http://fortgriswold.org - I'm including it in case anyone else visiting Groton for Labor Day would like to take their sailor.      Praying everyone else is safe from the hurricane.
