Janh, BESS is usually 9, meet him @ gate around 8 I would guess. Of course they should have told them. If you're like me you'll be early, you can catch up then and meet some of his friends. Have fun! I'll be there next weekend for A school graduation, so excited, then he gets leave until end of August when he reports to Hawaii.

One more thing for the kids checking luggage. My son was actually charged for his luggage by American Airlines when we flew home to CA even though he was in dress uniform. It made me so mad that when he flew out to Groton I made sure I had printed out the airlines policy. Of course I didn't need them since I had them! The man at the check-in counter even opened up a new window for him. :-) But better to be prepared.

We are here in Groton for BESS grad tomorrow. Anyone know what time grad is and what time to meet our son at the gate? He doesn't seem to know.

VickieM:  Also forgot to mention that I brought his laptop and all of the accessories in his backpack.  They have to carry their sea bag which is very, very heavy so the less weight you put in their back pack is probably better.  They were trying to shove stuff into my son's sea bag (they can't have anything tied to it hanging on the outside). They also had garment bags.  They checked the garment bags and sea bags of course but were allowed to bring their backpacks on the plane.  None of the items in the backpack can be given to him to bring back at RTC after his liberty is over.  The only way they can get the backpack is for you to meet them the next morning at the airport.  We were told by other N4M members to ask for a guy named Sarge (phone number 847-212-0246) who drives a taxi.  This gentleman is ex-military.  We couldn't find out where our boys were or where they were flying out (terminal number).  Sarge got on the phone and called contacts he had at the USO at the airport to find out if their bus had arrived yet from RTC.  He was able to get the information for us.  As far as I'm concerned he definitely went above and beyond the call of duty.  Also, they fly the guys out of Midway and/or O'Hare.  You have to know which airport he's flying out of.  Even though we had to leave the hotel at 2:30 am the morning he departed it was most definitely worth it.  We got to spend about an hour with him and met some of his buddies from boot who were also going to Groton.  You will be so proud seeing him walk through the airport all straight and proud in his dress whites!!!!!  I wouldn't give up that one extra hour for anything in the world!!!!  One more thing; we went to the ticket desk after all of the sailors checked their baggage and the airline ticket counter worker there gave us gate passes to follow the sailors all the way to the gate.  We were able to stay with them until they boarded the plane.  Hope this is enough info.  If you need anything else please let me know and I will be glad to help to the best of my ability.

Shannon-is he going to Bangor?  If so, he is going to love it there.  I used to live there and love the Pacific NW,  Its a great place to live!

Submarines are way safer then surface ships! I am much less worried with my boyfriend on a submarine. The last submarine to fail was 52 or something. They are hidden and yea x) safer.

VickieM:  I met my son at O'Hare the morning after PIR with a plain black back pack.  In it were his cell phone & charger, his iPod & charger, some civilian underwear, a pair of shorts and a couple of pairs of t-shirts.  His girlfriend made him a scrapbook of everything that happened while he was in boot camp so that was stuffed in there too.  All were allowed on base at BESS.  Hope that helps.
