Just got word from my sailor who started BESS July 11 - he says graduation is Friday, August 26.

Not sure of all the choices, but he wanted fast attack sub, and is going to Hawaii. I can't wait to visit him!

Raedez

My son's A school class got their duty stations today after lots of waiting. They too were told their things were messed up so why the delay. However when they chose today they were given choice by their class rank which is combo of test grades and inspection scores. They had limited choices due to where the Navy needs people. My son fortunately was close to top of his class, and his choice was needed, so he is happy right now.

My son and his class was allowed to choose their station after A school on last week. But the detailer messed things up, and he lost his choice. Has anyone else had an experience such as this one? He is very disappointed.

Emzee228,

Depending on where you live, it may be cheaper to fly into Milwaukee, WI than Chicago.  They're both about equal distance from Great Lakes.  We stayed at the Courtyard Mariott in Gurnee.  They arrange shuttles to the graduation for about $3 a person.  I'm not sure it's the cheapest place to stay--but there are a ton of restaurants near by and Walmart is across the street.  There's a Starbucks next door--I'm from Seattle--that was a selling point. :-)  The mall isn't that far away, either--which has a movie theatre attached.

Your husband may be a "grad-n-go." Which means you'll get to see him on Friday and he'll have to be back on base by 8:00ish that day.  Then they leave for Groton early Saturday morning.  I want you to be prepared up front--I knew this was a reality from the beginning, so we made the most out of the day we did have together.  My oldest son went to A school across the street from BC--so he spent the whole weekend with us.  So, only seeing my youngest for just a few hours was heartbreaking.  It was worth every moment--but I wish I could have seen him longer.

When my first son was in BC, I got to hear from him a few times (about every other week), but my youngest son only called once time about mid-way through BC and the day before we flew out to tell us he was definitely a grad-n-go.  I don't know if that was because he was on duty when the calls were made or if they were punished and denied phone calls.  My oldest son was rewarded with phone calls because he won the PT competition of the day.  Calling home really motivates recruits!

Hi, My youngest son has been in sub school in Groton for about three weeks now.  Stage 2 liberty is now obtained--and the begging of clothes and his computer. ;-)  I'm not sure which building he's in.

Mine left BC the next morning after PIR at 3 am for a 6 am flight to Groton. We met him at Ohare to see him off with a plain (no logos) black backpack with his cell phone, laptop, and civie underwear (his request).
Hang tough - the first 3-4 weeks of BC will be really hard for you (and them). Hook up with others via the FB and N4Moms pages. That helps alot. There will be subgroups on these pages for your SRs ship/division And PIR dates. It does get easier.

Emzee....is your husband at BC or already in Groton?  If your husband is at BC you can take his electronics (cell, laptop) with you to GL and you will have to meet him at the airport and give to him.

emzee228,

Yes your husband can have a phone and all of his electronics. He may need to get a PO box for you to send too.
