And Rose, we need to tell her that some of the schools are self paced and the boys don't all move through at the same time. Is J going to graduate in early September? iB says that he will graduate in early October. Which nicely ties in with one of my breaks. YEAH! I get to go to graduation.
Point here is, our two kids started at essentially the same time, but they have moved through at different paces.
Also, they seem to keep track of the order of graduation, in terms of time it takes as well as grade status. At least my son can tell me who was first to move to A school, and he knows what his place was in the class.

Hi Lorie-go to pages 15 and 14 to read Our discussion about Groton schools. Be sure to read 14 as I got the TCNO part wrong and mamamira fixed me, and now I still don't remember. Anyway, read those entries and then see if it makes sense.
My son has been at Groton since January, and is just now in his first month of A school. it is a rather long journey. But so much nicer than bootcamp! For them and us. Lol

Lorie.... I don't know what is your case but if he just finish BC right now may be he is in hold to start BESS.  Once he start BESS graduation is usually 8 weeks.  IF he pass everything he will graduated, if not he can be send back until he pass all the test.  Once they finish they usually are on hold until they put together another class.  After that is ATT that is around a month sometimes less depend on how fast they are.  Again hold for....Then TECNO, that is around a month or again less depend how fast.  Again hold for.....A school and usually is 4 months.  After A school, sometimes they need C- school.  In my son case he will finish A-school in September and hopefully he receive his orders by then.  As you can see is holds in between, that why they take a while.  My son got to Groton in Dec. 29 and he will finish September 9, so basically took almost nine months.  Also the time depends in what job is he doing.  I think everybody is a little different, but your son will be finding out as he goes.  Hope this help you a little.  Good Luck, and welcome to the group.

Thanks SailorMom. That gives me something to go on. I appreciate it.

When my son graduated on 5/19, the ceremony was at 9AM. I was at the gate at 7:30 because he had to be present for the gate guard to issue me a pass to get on post after his muster at 6:30. He got down to meet me more around 8:30 though and the actual ceremony was pushed back I think til eleven.

Once it was over he was free to take off and we left. He was off all weekend with me and didn't have to return to post until Monday morning at 5 AM -- although he got back there around 1 AM so he could do his uniform.

I was there for another week or so and got to see him when he did not have duty  -- so it worked out that he was on duty one day and then he was free to leave the next day when his duty was over at around 2 PM. We spent another couple days like that. They can get off post and are free to leave unless they have duty or are on some kind of discipline, which really isn't all that common.

Could someone tell me what the "normal" timeline for BESS graduation and weekend is. Like what time is the graduation on Friday. Then do they get the weekend days off? If they have a blue card, what time do they have to return to base the next morning? If they are on hold after BESS, do they get any additional time off the following week? I'm trying to plan our trip to BESS (graduation is 7/29). Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Ladies!  I am also planning to go to Groton over the 4th of July weekend...I did alot of checking around on the rooms before booking my room at the Ramada Inn...the prices seem to be higher because it is a holiday weekend.  My son graduated BESS on 6/3, and we were unable to attend because of some priorities here at home.  His original graduation date was 6/10, and they bumped it up a week because they got done faster.  They were actually done a week sooner than graduation, and had liberty and duties that week.  I also learned that if your grade fell below a certain average, they require them to attend "Night Study"....@BECKIE....have you heard him mention if he was having to attend night study?  Also, I was recommended a book called Flotsam & Jetsam, by Harry McKinney, Rear Adm, USN ret.  The book tells stories of his 40 yr career in the Navy...he was a Submariner....I finally purchased it, and I cant put it down.  You might want to check it out.  I am gonna read it and pass on to my Sailor, there is a picture of the "escape trainer" in the book, and it talks alot about New London

Cheri...just curious...what class is your son in (graduation date??).
Comment by Rose7..Norfolk on June 15, 2011 at 9:22pm
Beckie....I agree with Cheri, don't worry too much.  Your feeling could be right but also can be that he didn't pass a test.  They have to pass everything if not they hold them back.  So my opinion is try to find out and encourage him may be he need to study a little harder.  Good luck!!
