What do they look for? They must have tests of some sort.

Proud Navy Mom: I agree with Cheri. Your Sailor will catch on quick. The Navy (and your Sailor) have not invested and endured BC to shrug it off now. They still have the instructors and fellow Navy team to keep them focused. They learned the importance of teamwork in BC. Remember he just survived BC - not everyone did. I think he may be right, after BC, BESS will be easier! My Sailor says that the Submariners have to be a tight team because each Sailor has an important role that can be crucial to survival. The Navy trains them well. My Sailor did well on the exams, said the swim or escape test was a breeze, but the water leak test was tough. He didn't mention the fire test. It is hard to pin him down now that he has weekend liberty. So little time and so much to see and do --- too be young, single and a Sailor!! Hooyah!

cc: thank you so much.  After boot camp this is a whole other area to get used to and to learn about.  I've read that sub school is very intense and fast paced; I've tried to relay that info to my sailor but he just brushes it off.  He doesn't really believe it's going to be that difficult.  What did your son have to say about the school, classes, was it fast paced, etc????  Thank you so much for the information!!!

Proud Navy Mom: Like your web picture! My son just finished BESS training in Groton. http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/blbess.htm this is a link to the typical daily schedule for the Basic Enlisted Submarine School (BESS). I think of it as Sub101. It tests the sailors to determine if the submarine duty is best suited for them. They train and test in the simulated confinements of a mock submarine environment. If the sub environment is a issue, then they go to ship training in another location.

Hi everybody....my son is graduating BESS this Friday....he was on hold for about 2 weeks then 1 week of briefing before the actual 8 week class started.  They have said in the past to count on a couple of weeks worth of holds in between schools.  I dont know if you have been told but there are two other classes between BESS and A school, they are ATT and TCNO.  Also, some Sailors do not stay in Groton for their A school, but most do.  I have also learned just because they are enlisted as a submariner, does not mean they are guarnteed to finish one, a n4m's son that lives in my area, was removed from the program because her son was late for class too many times.  So heads up the worrying part does not get any easier.

janh sub mama, yes, technically all the class should take 10 months or so- but typically there are holds of varying lengths while waiting to "class up" since they wait until groups above them move on to make room in the next class up for the new groups. That can take a week or more, each time. So most people end up spending about a year, in some cases slightly more, in Groton for school.

Jim's cupcake, you are right about the rolling eyes, only my son is 23. His decision to join the Navy came a bit later. From all the info you and the other moms have offered, I'm sure he will like it there

Jim's cupcake and NG: I'm in CA as well. My son just arrived in Groton! So SCEF get thru BESS, other classes and A-school within 10 months?
