I moved into housing before he actually graduated, and he did already have the orders he needed for it, but he ALSO had to get the move signed off by the Chiefs since it was before graduation. They allowed us to go ahead and move since my son and I were "homeless" and living with my parents. Under normal circumstances you do have to wait until graduation. But your husband can have his orders printed out and start the paperwork with housing to get your house so you can move as soon as possible after graduation. Also, don't worry about the money spent on the hotel- you will get reimbursed for it since it is part of your covered PCS move. It's called TLE- Temporary Lodging Expense. Just make sure that you talk to the Navy Gateway on base first. You must stay with them to have your hotel cost covered. If they are full they will give you a certificate of non-availability and a list of recommended places to stay in town, and you will file that together with your receipts from the hotel for reimbursement. It will take a few weeks after you file everything but you will get that money back so don't worry. :)

I forgot to add, does he have to actually have the orders in hand in order to get a house on base? I have heard of some wives moving up there into base housing before their husbands graduate BESS.  If we can do that, it will save us a ton of money by not having to stay in a hotel the week of graduation.  Sorry for so many questions!

Thanks MamaMiri!!  I can't wait to move up there, I'm so excited to start our new life, and finally be a family again.

SubWife2011, essentially yes. If I recall correctly he had the orders he needed about 3 or 4 weeks before the end of BESS, but no one really volunteered that info, he had to go looking for them. As long as they are 342 orders you should be good to go as soon as he graduates. I don't recall how long the A school is exactly but my DH is going to be FT so I'll check with him.

So excited, we have reservations at the Naval Lodge for graduation on 7/1/11.  Excited about seeing my son, not so excited about the long drive.  Illinois to CT.

So after they graduate BESS, we get to move up there the next week if we have a house? I was thinking it would take longer, but that's awesome.  About when do they receive their orders during BESS?  My husband graduates on July 15 and I'm just trying to figure out about when we would be able to move up there.  Also, does anyone know how long FT A School is?

Congrats Ashley! If they have a place to show you on Tuesday (which I assume they do if you have an appointment to see a house), that means it is available for immediate rent and if you accept it you will have keys the same day. That's what happened for us- we had an appointment for a Monday afternoon, she showed us the one unit they had available (well, there was one more in Trident Park but we really weren't interested) and we decided to go for it, signed papers and had the keys by 5pm!

Yay:) Robert graduates BESS next Friday & will be flying home to help our son and I make our way to our new home!

I am so excited to live up there. He goes to look at housing next Tuesday, and they said he'll have the keys the same day, but I'm prepared for that to change the last minute.

Well be headed that way bright and early Tuesday morning and I couldn't be more excited!

New SR Wife - thank you for the motel information. I will check into this one. I was just planning on staying at Navy Lodge but I will definitely check out this one and a couple more that were suggested.

Janlee - thanks for the link. I haven't checked it out yet but I definitely will.

Hi Ladies,

What do we know about A school graduation? I couldn't make it out for BESS graduation after being there for PIR, but am planning on the A school ceremony.

My son says that if we stay on base he has to be with us to escort us around any time we want to leave the hotel. Did anyone else have that experience?

He is waiting to "class-up" for A school so will start any day now…so many changes in so little time. Thanks for any info you can send my way.

Nancy
