Thank you all for the information. I can't wait to get to see him. My husband wants to fly but I want to drive. I have never been on an airplane and am claustrophobic. Would much rather drive 14 hours lol!!!  I was thinking we would stay at the Navy Lodge but I will check out the other motels to see which is more economical. Definitely don't need anything fancy...just clean!!

Thanks again everyone!!

Lynn-Yes graduation is on a friday. Getting on base is not hard. it is so much easier and more laid back now that they are out of BC. When you arrive at the base..your son will meet you there and take you into a small office to get a pass. You will then back in the car and drive thru the gate, find a parking space and then will all walk to the ceremony hall together. It is a small room with a stage  area and seating for family. the Sailors will be seated behind you and will be called across the stage one by one. The officers encourage picture and taking and seem to enjoy interacting with the families during the ceremony. Yes..you will get to spend time with your son afterwards. My son, me, and his girlfriend all went to lunch afterwards, and then he spent the night at the hotel with us. he needed to return to base at 5:30 the next morning, but i was more than willing to set my alarm!!

The ceremony is small, but i wouldnt have missed it, especially since my son was able to get leave right after and drive home with us for 7 days. i havent seen him since, so i recommend going.

Can anyone give me information on BESS Graduation...is graduation always on a Friday?  Do they get to spend time with us after graduation?  Whats the process for getting on base?  My son will graduate in July, we will be going to graduation, Im just not finding much information on it.  Thanks in advance for any help/info.

Hi everyone,

Bess graduation was very nice and much more informal than PIR.  A smaller group and the families could stand up and ask for pictures.  After the graduation we had the  opportunity to tour the USS Miami.  What an experience. If you can make the trip, it is nice time spent with your sailor.

Angie, my son will also be graduating on 7/1/11.  Going to be a crazy weekend, still trying to information on where to stay as we will be driving in from Illinois.  If I get any information I will be more than happy to share.
