I'm looking for some where to live this coming May while my husband is in A school. I want some where close to base but I've heard that there are some areas in San Antonio that are sketchy. I also need a place that could furnish and allow or large chocolate lab!! Thank you so much!!!!

There is a program whereby some off-base housing rentals are "pre-approved."  The rental properties must go through an inspection. Then a list of these "pre-approved" rental properties is created. I've pasted some info produced by JBSA (Joint Base San Antonio) below. Good Luck & Welcome to Texas!

Call 210-270-7638 or visit the Family Housing website http://www.lincolnmilitary.com/lmh/installations/fort_sam/

But don't I need him to be living with me? Or that be where were stationed because it's just for A school

Contact the housing office for particulars.

Personally, I wouldn't move to San Antonio just for A school. There are just so many unknowns that I don't think it will be worth it. There are also many things to factor in... he will be in school mon thru fri usually 6am to 6pm, if he doesn't do well in school he will be required to attend study hall at 7pm every night, he will stand duty about every 10 days, will not be allowed to live with you, will not be allowed to have a car on base.

Most places that are nice places to live are at least 15 to 20 minutes from Ft. Sam. So you would be picking him up at 6pm and having him back at his barracks by 930pm. Plus spending gas and time shuttling him back and forth to spend a few hours with him.

Now, for the answer to your question. If we were to move back to Ft. Sam I would love to live in the Alamo Ranch area. That would be about a 30 minute drive to ft sam. We lived off of 410 and Marbach. I wouldn't live anywhere inside the loop 410 or near I10. There is just too much crime in those areas for me. A lot of the apartments near Lackland Air Force Base are pretty safe as well.

I agree with Britt... my husband is going to A school end of April and we have two dogs and of course I am going to miss him but it is not wise financially for me to move out there.  You'll be in the apartment by yourself all day and he won't be able to stay overnight until his last phase which won't be until the last month.  I would save up all the BAH and fly to see him once a month, that's what my husband and I agreed to do.

Thank you everyone for the concerns. We have thought this through, without him here I really don't have much, so moving to Texas would honestly be better because at least I'd have him, also my job can transfer me down there. Sitting in Michigan in a house, alone, is much worse than being in Texas with him. Also, I've talked to wives who have moved to where there husband is for A school and they say they see them almost everyday. The phases also depend on whoever is in charge of them, it could take 3 weeks for them to be able to stay off base or it could take 3 months. And I don't know if anyone has told you guys, but if your sailor gets there and can't start classes right away(which may happen due to there not being room in classes) he can ask to live off base because corpsman school is one week shy of them being able to live with a spouse (A school has to be 20 weeks to stay off base with a spouse)

Is the Navy paying for you to move or is this out of pocket?  I know if the schooling is not 5months or more then they don't.  More for my knowledge since I am not aware of how it works.

it's out of pocket unless the A School is 20 weeks or more. Corpsman A school is 19

The navy will NOT pay for you to move to Texas and they will NOT pay for you to move from Texas to your first duty station. I had a hard time getting them to pay for me to move to and from there for C school that was 6 months long. And they absolutely will not allow an A schooler to live off base with their spouse. They don't even let fleet returnees going to A school live off base if they are married. Unless the whole command has changed, good luck! Your husband will have to be in his room by 10pm every night except weekends (once he has earned liberty)
Hi I know this is old but for anyone new or ending up finding this thread. Moving in special circumstances to be close to your hubby during A school is not impossible. If it works for you good for you. It worked for me. My lease ended and I packed my stuff in storage for $100 a month cut off all my bills electric, gas cable etc and packed my car up and drove 3days with my one year old alone! To be with my hubby. It didn't cost anything but gas I only paid 1 toll from pa to tx which was 15$. I looked up extended stay hotels however when I got here I didn't like the extended stay hotel around fort Sam look like the hood so I was advised to look room for rent spent 3 days meeting potential landlord and found an air force family to rent from. I'm actually spending less money! My rent was $1000 the room is 650 everything included! And it's 25 min away from my husband, I do not visit him during the week and if he doesn't have duty he spends the weekend over and we are super happy! He gets to bond with his only son and I see him, he says if I had not come he doesn't know how or what he would have done. He wanted to speak with a counselor because he fear he was getting depressed from not seeing us. He study's week days at night And we hang out on weekend. We did not move official or whatever our little things are still in Pennsylvania and we will get them when it's time to move. He is actually 2nd in his class sucks because he didn't pick orders with the corpsman because he is staying for dental school so after that.bye
