After completion of A school, corpsmen may go directly to Fleet, or to medical treatment facilities (hospitals or clinics), or to Field Medical Training Battalion for eight weeks of additional training with Marines; or to C School.

Within the HM rating there are 38 occupational specialties which require further technical training via C-schools. Most specialty training is long and intense; many are at least one year in length. Some of the most demanding specialties, such as independent duty corpsmen, go through a series of schools as their career progresses. One of the specialties - Mortician - requires civilian licensing prior to entry into the Navy.

The diversity of the HM rating is evident with these Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs).

Click the blue-highlighted links for additional information about that NEC.

Here's a list of NECs, their schools and locations.  Be sure to read through the Replies too as people add more information about various C Schools.

Wow! Marcy, you have really outdone yourself.  You are a lifesaver!  Thank you so much for the time you take to keep us all informed.  With the information you've posted so far, I can't tell you how much time you have saved me. Thanks again!

Are you saying that the A and C schools could be in the same place? My SR is going to A school in San Antonio to become a Surgical Technologist. So the A school will be 14 weeks and the C school may take 1 year. Does this mean we won't be together for almost 2 years? Now my SR in in BC, GL, il with the PIR May 3. I do not know much because i do not have a contact with my SR. Do you know anything about it?

Hello Marika, my son is in 12/167 PIR May 3..........he will be going to San Antonio afterwards.  keep in touch

Dear backpacker,

When your son started his A school?  My husband started on May 15.  Nonetheless, i do not know his class #, length of the training and the graduation date?  Do you know all of this?  Which program is your son in?  Do you know whether with my husband?  I would really appreciate any info.  Thank you and God Bless You!!!  m.

@Marika - it's a ton of training, but you are able to visit as much as you can on the weekends. We brought groceries and clothes to our son when he got to San Antonio and explored the base together. They can't leave the base their first week, but they have a bowling alley on base for fun. Good luck to you!
@trish, would u know if i can visit my SR on the first weekend? I believe they wont be allowed to leave the base yet since they just got there and they still have to phase up. Thanks

@markswifey - yes, definitely!  They are allowed to have visitors, just as long as they stay on base.  Their curfew when the first get there is 10pm each night.  You can even see his room, as long as you check into the front desk at the barracks.  They will get the roving watch (2 sailors that patrol the barracks hallways) to escort you to the room and wait for you to leave.  We brought our son a ton of groceries and some clothes, so I helped him to stock his fridge and closet while my husband chatted with the roving watchmen while we finished up.  They can't leave you alone in the room, but we didn't need privacy anyway.  We hung out until 9:30pm and then he checked back into his barracks and we drove back to our hotel.

There are patio tables scattered around the building where they have classes (Anderson Hall) that is only about a 5 minute walk from the barracks that is nice to just sit and talk.  There is also a large green field to the left of the barracks that no one uses that is nice for a long picnic, but bring a thick blanket!  There are tons of brambles in the field.  Of course, there is also the PX, Commissary, Burger King, the bowling alley, and a small food court on base, too.  All of which are about a 5 minute drive from the barracks.

Thank you Trish for this info. Would you possibly know whether i could stay with my husband off base, while he is in A school training? If not, which place to stay, not too expensive and clean, would you recommend? Are they off on Fridays until Sundays? Would you know if, where and for how long would they have to go to C school? Do you know that i would be able to join him at this point to live with him, either on or off base?

Take care and God Bless to you and your family!!! Marika, my SR PIR is on May 3.

I'm not that familiar with places to stay long term since we are usually there just for the weekends.  I am sure the base has a Navy Housing office or something that could help.  As far as living off base, I'm not sure if they can do that during A School.  My son has a roommate that is married, but he can only leave to stay with his family during the weekends, and only after he phased to the level of overnight weekend liberty.

You could definitely stay with him, as long as you can afford it without moving assistance from the Navy.  Since Corps school is only 14 weeks long, it doesn't fit the requirement of a long term assignment, which means the military won't pay to move you.  Most of the C schools are longer, so you would have a better chance of getting assistance then.  Good luck to you!

Does anyone know the length of C Schools? My boyfriend will be in San Antonio doing the Pharmacy Tech C School.

X-Ray tech C school-
6 months of classroom training in SA.
6 months clinical work in San Antonio, TX, Portsmouth, VA or San Diego, CA. The clinicals locations depends on the class and/or the rank in each class. 4 people in my husbands class went to SD and 4 went to VA.The Navy will pay for the spouse to move to SA for C school. Keep all of your receipts and go to the army moving office once you get there. The Navy will also pay for you to move to the clinical location. Get a POA and take care of everYthing for your spouse. They will not allow them to miss class for things like that.School hours: M-F 5am (on PT days) til 5 pmClinical hours: M-F rotating schedule. Mostly day shifts 6:15 til 4pm or evening shifts 3 pm- 11pm.Both classroom and clinical work have graduation ceremonies. But not as nig as A School and bootcamp.

The same goes for med lab tech.

My son graduated from "A" school in May 2012. He went on to "C" school - Surgical Tech and stayed in San Antonio, TX. The school goes for 6 months and then you pick job locations. My son is now working at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
