Before posting a Discussion with a question, please ask it in the Comments section, and look through the Discussions - you may find what you need, plus a lot more.  This is a good one: Info for those new (or not so new) to Hospital Corps A School.  For some questions, your best bet may be to call the quarterdeck or campus support center at METC.

There is a graduation ceremony, and families and loved ones are invited to attend.  If you go, here are Hotel recommendations for San Antonio/Ft Sam Houston from corpsman moms, and this pdf with Directions to Ft Sam Houston/Walters Gate/Anderson Hall.  Anderson Hall (MIF 4) is on Cpl Johnson Road between Garden and Womack, and there is a parking lot on Cpl Johnson Rd across the street.

GRADUATION SCHEDULE:  your sailor is your best source for date, time and any changes.  Basic Medical Technician Corpsman Program on Facebook is NOT an official page, but they do post some photos of graduations.

Read this to find out What is Field Medical Training Battalion (FMTB)?  (They have a great graduation ceremony for families to attend, too!)  Most corpsmen attend FMTB sooner (straight from A School) or later.  It does NOT mean that they will necessarily be assigned to a Marine Corps unit.

Females go to FMTB-East only.  Otherwise, it's up to the needs of the Navy as to which location a Corpsman is sent to.

Corpsmen serve in a variety of settings.  "Blueside" corpsmen serve in hospitals and clinics and on ships.  "Greenside" corpsmen are with forward-deployed Marine units and where one can earn the hard-won and highly valued Fleet Marine Force (FMF) qualification.  There is nothing like the love that Marines have for their "Doc."  Seriously.

Hospital Corpsman Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) - There are 38 - thirty-eight! - specialties within the HM rating, from Search & Rescue (8401) to Dental Lab Tech/Maxillofacial (8765).  Here is a list of HM NECs and C school locations.

Rating/Rate in ascending order

Annev - Thank you! That helps! Any extra time to spend with her is great, whether it be at 2 am or 5 pm. Guess I will have to train my old body to make it past midnight, lol.

T

ink, Mine left on Sunday morning after graduating Friday morning, so we had a bonus all day Saturday with him.  They left out of Midway (seems like a lot do, but some of his friends left from O-hare - just depends!)  They got there at 2am and we were there waiting.  It was worth it - got to hand him all his stuff and stay until they boarded at 5am. I had mailed a letter to him before with fill in the blanks for his flight #, time leaving Great Lakes, time arriving at airport, etc.  They should get those just prior to PIR and they can tell you.  It was frustrating, because we flew in, had to have plane reservations, etc.  We were there 4th of July weekend, so we had decided to stay until Sunday just in case - didn't want to miss that airport handoff.

It seems more leave on Saturday than Sunday.  Also, they usually get to the airport around 2 am so they can get checked in before "regular" people start checking in. There were 2 bus loads arriving at 2, and it took them until about 4:30 for the 1st group leaving at 5:30 to get checked in. The other bus load wasn't leaving until 5 that afternoon, but had gotten there at 2 as well.  Their families can stay with them all day.  Hope that helps.

Can anyone give me an idea of when their Sailor left GL after PIR and if a majority leave out of Midway or O'hare. Just trying to plan some things (I know, kind of hard to do) and thought I could get a general idea. My SR said something about wee hours Saturday morning. .??? I want to at least be able to get her personal items to her.

Hi All!  My son (Class 160) graduated Aug 29 on a Monday - so Monday graduations do happen!  We stayed at Comfort Inn on I-35 - bed was comfy, pillows great, towels very nice....clean room.  It was a little noisy during the night from freeway traffic and train whistles but a good place to stay and close to post.  Free breakfast.  We arrived for 9am graduation about 7:30am and were the only parents in the audience for at least 40 minutes....wondered if anybody else would show up!  About 50 parents attended...lots of seating left.  It was in their teaching theatre - graduated seating so very easy to see.  It was a nice program - great motivatioinal speaker about continuing their education in the Navy.....each called by name and walked across the stage.  Lots of photo opportunities. So much more intimate than boot camp graduation! Clilnicals will be at their new location. The programs called graduation 'medical technicians"....as was bootcamp grad they were only released to visit family onsite for a short while and had to muster up until later in the afternoon when they could have the rest of the afternoon off.  That was a little disappointing as we had to drive back to Houston just about the time he got off.....There is very little parking so may as well start at the big lot to the south of the bldgs....a couple of blocks walk.  Dress was fairly casual.....a couple of dad's wore shorts but most were in slacks/dockers.  Slacks, skirts, sundresses for women were fine.  My son had applied for leave before going to his assignment in VA but he has yet to get his airline ticket and/or be released from base. I hope this helps some of you who are looking forward to this day!   Kris

mommybetts, my hubby started briefings/classes 8/15 and should get phase 3 (where he can leave for the weekend) sometime next week. He says, though, that their class is being pushed through really fast so give or take a couple weeks. Your SR should know pretty quickly after he gets there though! Hope that helps!

Hello! I am wanting to know how long it takes to phase up to where my SM can leave out of town for the weekend? Thanks so much. Right now we are 9/291 and graduating next Friday. :)
Comment by corpsmanwifeschu on August 30, 2011 at 5:36pm
He made it seem like they would know Friday. I asked if the holiday was going to interfere with that, he didn't really seem to know one way or another. Fingers are crossed that they get news Friday. Good your Sailor gets the C school he's interested in.
