It has been almost 2 years since my son landed in Yokosuka(and I've seen him)! He will have leave in April and the hubby, 2 other sons and I are going!! We are super excited! BUT, I do have a few questions.

1. Good place to stay? (Other than the Navy Lodge, because they are already booked the 2 weeks we will be there) :(

2, Cool places to visit?

3. Cool places to eat?

Unfortunately, there hasn't been a whole lot of communication from him, since he is on deployment. So, I'm trying to plan as much from my end as I can!!

Thanks!!

Thank you for writing this.  We are planning on going the last week in March through the first week in April.  Good to know about the Navy lodge.  Bummer for us as well.

So, is your son on Curtis Wilbur?? Or is this the time they all get leave?

No, just when he said it would be a good time to go. To see the cherry blossoms. Either then or the fall.

Finding cool places to visit is pretty easy, and if you want local attractions, he can take you by Fleet and Family Services and pick up the maps and handouts for the area.  Kamakura was my favorite, but there is a lot to see in Yokohama and Tokyo.  Hakona is lovely, but you need wheels for that.  Nikko is amazing, but is a long day trip.   Heck, just going to the local foods department in the basement on the local department store can burn half a day!

I love Chinatown in Yokohama.

No problem with places to eat.  I love the cool places off base with the wax food in the window, you just point at what looks interesting.  Seriously, if you end up at Chilis on base, you're doing it wrong.  Do try the sushi place with the conveyor belt, that's a riot.

This will help you know what to expect:

Thank you Anti M!!!

Looking forward to seeing my son and I am sure he will be a good tour guide but all your guidance is appreciated.

yes when you find out please post my son is suppose to be going there sometime soon.i like to know about tickets n where to stay

Okay! Thanks for the sites. I'm waiting from word from my son to see what he wants to do. I guess April is the best time to go! I'll gather my favorite places and get a list for you all!!

I haven't been to Japan I just live thru my son's photography. You have a great time.  There are lots of great parks, my son love hang out there. He does a lot trekking on his time off and going to museums as well. He just at the Auto show there!

I guess we are going to try AirBnB for a place to stay. Son checked the hotels and they are all booked. What cities should we be looking into to be near the base?

The base is in the city of Yokosuka, even the smaller places will show up under that.  Also, Kamakura and Zushi Beach are not too far (up to an hour by train is not very far to me in Japan).    Yokohama is not too far away by train, so that would work too.  The prefecture (county) is Kanagawa.

The hotels near the base which are affordable fill up with families PCSing which is why it can be hard to find a room.

I glanced at airbnb, looks like there are several right in town.

We rented an Air B&B too! We are going to stay in the middle of Tokyo. He said he didn't want to stay close to the base, so we are staying close to Disney instead! He will take us to the base, though.

1. Good place to stay? (Other than the Navy Lodge, because they are already booked the 2 weeks we will be there) :(

-Try Navy Gateway Inn & Suites (NGIS). They are also inside the base and is actually more conveniently located than the Navy Lodge. Here's their phone number: 011-81-46-816-7317 You can email them too and they respond promptly: ngis_yokosuka@fe.navy.mil  NGIS is located right at Womble Gate and has easy access to "Blue Street."

2, Cool places to visit? - See attached ITT tours provided by the base. It will give you some ideas on what is "in season" or places that are popular to visit. You must visit temples!! They are located everywhere but my favorite is Koncho-ji Temple in Kita-Kamakura... it's 20 minutes on the train from Yokosuka-Chuo station on the Keikyu Line. :)

3. Cool places to eat? LOTS. You should try sushi-go-round at least once (that's just a way they serve sushi- on conveyor belts) and yakiniku (bbq)!
