This is how you do it? Yeah Day 1 my son just signed on the dotted line at MEPS and his job some day will be Mass Communications Specialist:) He and I are very excited! We don’t have any firm dates, he was told he would go to boot camp between now and April. He is 20 and not a student so who knows. Thank you for allowing me in your group:) we are in Wilmington, NC

Any advice on how to spend the hours we get on PIR day? What did your sailors want to do? Trying to decide on a good dinner and resting/visiting at hotel or planning something more.

Xtionna - unfortunately you probably won't find out when he flies out until PIR.

You should send him a white 3x5 card and write on it: Airline________ Airport___________Flight#_________

Date__________ Time____________

Have him fill it out and keep it and then give it to you at PIR.  Often in all the excitement they forget their specific flight info.  This way he can just hand you the card all filled out and you will know where you need to be and when!

But you better hurry up and get it in the mail to him today!

My daughter is graduating from MC school on Wednesday! We have been fortunate because we are about a 3 hour drive away so have been able to go there monthly to see her. That will change as she will be leaving for an overseas assignment once her leave time is up. The living quarters are dorm style, she has one roommate, they have their own bathroom. She has her computer, her own wifi, coffeepot, etc. Good luck to your son and welcome to the group!

P.S. We got to sit in the airport for about 10 hours with her on the day she flew out from Ohare….what a treat!

@Xtionna  - We did not find out our son's flight time until we saw him at PIR.  His flight was for early early the next morning.

We had about 6.5 hours with him the day of graduation.  We then met with him at the airport (only time you can give them their phone, etc) and had about another 2 hours with him then.

Thanks for the info. A few more ?s..

When did you find out your sons flight time for Maryland? Before PIR day? Trying to schedule things. Also, how long did you have with him the day of graduation? Appreciate the time.

@Xtionna - Welcome to the family!  My son is currently in MC school and will be finishing in August.  (Last class of the old curriculum)

Yes, they are in barracks (dorms).  My son has 2 roommates.  He gave me a video tour of his room shortly after he arrived.  It is very cramped so not a lot of space for "comforts".  That being said he has a small flat screen TV and a PS4.  Their room also had a small refrigerator and microwave.

I gave him his phone at the airport after PIR so he has been able to call and text regularly.  But this is a tough course so don't expect to talk to your sailor every day.  Typically either one of his siblings (they are close) or myself here from him at least once a week.

Oh. And I have requested to join FB group several times and have heard nothing back. Any help?

Comment by Xtionna on April 17, 2019 at 4:10pm

My son graduates BC on April 26. Will be off to Maryland for MC. Really would appreciate any info about what they can take/have in A school. Are they in dorms and if so with how many others? Can they have ‘comforts’ in their rooms? Can you communicate regularly? I know nothing and that is very difficult for a parent...
