Hi,

We just found out that our daughter will be sent to flight school in Pensacola.  We were wondering about housing recommendations.  My understanding is that they move around a bit during the training so no long term leases.  I think the first thing they start with is 6 weeks long.  I've got a lot to learn and any help would be greatly apprectiated.

Hi,

Your daughter will be sent to Pensacola for IFS (if she doesn't have her private pilots license) and API.  They say it will be 6 weeks but that isn't always the case, 6 weeks is how long API takes from the day you class up if you do not roll for any reason.  You have to usually sign a lease which is a year long lease but there is the Military clause that allows you to break your lease with 30days notice.  All Pensacola area rental companies are very familiar with it and work with military people easily.  If she lives more than 35 miles from her address in Pensacola to Whiting field then if she gets sent to Milton she will be allowed to break her lease.  Most people choose to live outside the back gate in Pensacola.  When they are in A pool they have to muster everyday before they class up.  We spent about 6months in Pensacola before we were sent to Whiting Field for Primary and living out the back gate was super convenient for my husband.  I worked in Pensacola so know a lot of the rough areas because my job sent me into those areas so if you have any questions just ask.  Pensacola is broken up into areas with township names.

Hi there!

Great reply below, covers it all.  But from personal experience, our DS had a comfortable apt at Austin Woods, right out back gate.  Our DS was there for  a 4 month stretch and the lease was no problem.  Just avoid getting an apt that's right on Blue Angel Parkway, it can get noisy with the traffic.  Best of Luck!

Wow! This is great information. Thank you! My son will be going to Pensacola also. I forwarded your postings to him. He is planning to start out living with one of his current ROTC roommates who is going to Pensacola for NFO training. They are hoping that the timing works out. It's kind of scary (for me--He's not scared) not knowing when or how much advance notice he'll get.

There are some great places to rent here in Pensacola area.

Here's my moving article from my Military moving blog:

http://eek-moving-again.blogspot.com/2012/10/renting.html

Our son lived in a beautiful apartment at Countrywood- Blue Angel...nice facilities, close to base. He moved to Ashborough in Milton for Primary, again nice place!

Make sure they get renters insurance and flood insurance.   My LO left right before the flood to go to Corpus.  Several of his classmates were flooded out and lost a lot.

I told my LO that he should just get used to keeping the coverage as they will probably live on or near  the coast for several years.
