Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on apartments or housing off base in Charleston?  My son, who is an officer and not married starts Power School Feb 1. Anybody need a roommate?

Hi! My husband will be starting Nuke power school around the same time. My assumption is that he'll be at NNPTC, which is located in Goose Creek, SC. That's about a half hour drive from North Charleston, so that should be taken into consideration. Is he married? If so I would advise staying either on the Weapons Station housing (down the street from NNPTC) or look in Goose Creek for rental options. Sorry if I rambled off the topic of your question. I've just done a lot of research in preparation for the move and what to expect. Hope it helps :)

Thank you for your input.  It is all helpful when looking online.  Is Goose Creek a better location than Hanahan?

Is your son married?  If not, he will have on-site housing just like in A school.  He might be staying in the same building or they will move him to a building with others in Power School.  When he moves on to Prototype, he will have to find an apartment.

No, my son is not married and is an officer which means off bas housing for him.

My son graduated Power School on October 30 and moved into a very nice apartment with a fellow nuke for his roommate.  They are in Cypress River Apartments - http://www.cypressriverapts.com/ - on Blue House Road in North Charleston. The apartments are so nice! And very new, built in 2013. Washer and dryer in each apartment, ceiling fans in all rooms, energy efficient, nice kitchens with granite countertops. Huge pool.  My son and his friend are in a two bedroom, two bathroom unit and it is working out very well for them.  I actually called the apartment office and talked to the manager. They are very nuke friendly.  If either my son or his roommate gets orders, that will break the lease with no penalties.  The other can either start a fresh lease with another roommate, or start a fresh lease in another unit with another roommate, or by himself, whatever. They have one, two, and three bedroom apartments. Limited access property with a gate.  Very nice.

Thank you for this recommendation along with all the details.  We had put this complex on our list this weekend but it's hard to jump right in when your not there to see!

Rosemom - is your son an officer?  Maybe they have different housing rules....enlisted will continue to live in the base housing for power school.  They'll move off base for prototype (or if they are married they can live off base during A school & power school too).

Yes, my son is an officer.  Off base housing for him and we are not sure where Prototype will be Charleston or Ballston Spa, NY.

Yes if he is an officer, they live off base for Power School.  I have a good friend who son is an officer and he lived in an apartment in Summerville.

Thank you.  If you have any apartment complexes to recommend please send them.

Rosemom - I can't help you with housing in SC - my son is enlisted so he lived on base.  But when the time comes for proto if he ends up in Ballston Spa Winner's Circle is where my son lived.  Nice apartments.....here's an old post of mine from the BS group - he was there for a year and liked it....

I know there might be a group heading to Ballston Spa soon and looking for a place to live.  My son has been there since January and he and his buddies rent at The Winners Circle.  It's pretty close to the plant (which is a good thing especially during the winter!).  Very nice apartments.  They have 1, 2 & 3 bedrooms and nice amenities - pool, weight room, garage.  They do require a one year lease but they rent to a lot of Navy personnel and they will allow you to break the lease when your orders change.  We visited in April and I can vouch for them - nice apartments!  Oh - they are unfurnished but they do come with a washer/dryer!

My son is doing the same. We're torn as to what we should send him with in terms of furniture knowing he will keep moving. What has your officer decided he will bring?
