Hi, my son's PIR is 1-8-16 and then he's off to Charleston for Nuke school.   Can any of you ladies give me an idea what he might need while he's there, if anything?  Will he need a laptop for school, etc.  Thanks!

I am in the same situation. My son heads to Charleston 1/16/15. Is there a link or page that lists what they need there?

My son just arrived and most of what they need is either provided or they can buy at the NEX. My son is buying a laptop as they have cubbies where they can lock them up when not in use. He also purchased some civilian clothing, but he can only wear them while on liberty.

Sue - he won't really "need" anything.  The laptop will be for his personal use only.  Nothing allowed inside of the Rickover and nothing allowed to be removed from the Rickover.  Usually the first stop when they all get to GC is to head to the local Best Buy.  From what I remember word was that was one of the top Best Buys for sales as all the nukes would show up & couldn't wait to buy toys lol!  He might want a special blanket or pillow - some even buy new sheets and towels.  Mine just used what the Navy gave him.  He didn't buy a tv or laptop and he's not a gamer so he didn't buy that either.  Once he got to prototype he did get a laptop & they bought a new (big) TV for their apartment.  I think there's a post in the discussion forum about some suggested ideas.  I'll look for it & bump it if I can find it.....

Oh yes, the civilian clothes - that was probably the biggest thing my son bought.  Was going to send him some of his clothes but he just went shopping instead.  Didn't buy a lot 'cuz they don't have much room but he did update his wardrobe!

thank you, that's very helpful.  Is the Rickover where their classroom instruction is?  And that's funny about the Best Buy -- I bet the salepeople spot the new Nukes a mile away, their haircut (and "military bearing") give them away!

Yes the Rickover is where all instruction is done.....they will spend a lot of time there lol!

I did find the discussion & I bumped it.....it's got a lot of items listed, but they are just a suggestion.  Don't feel you need to get everything (or anything for that matter) on the list!  Your son will have money to get what he needs and just remember they don't have a lot of room (and they have room inspections so everything needs to be put away!).

My daughter is in A school now. She says that the Navy provides what she needs. She did purchase a lap top for her own personal entertainment but the thing that excited her the most was when we brought her bicycle to her. She can get lots of places via bike and enjoys the exercise.
Can have a game system and laptop in the Barack room, but all their school is classified and no electronics, cell phone included allowed in and all study is done in the class room, nothing leaves. That is part of what makes it tough. Gift cards for Starbucks or subway. Toiletries, their own sheets.

an iron !!!

a GOOD iron.

His most prized possession.

fufu @ the Rock - funny you mention the iron.  My son has been in 3 years now and still doesn't own an iron lol!  And he always passes his uniform inspections with the highest marks.  Not sure how he does it, but he does!

Ditto about the Navy satisfying their basic needs.  They can wear civvies after a month or two. Most of them have laptops and mine has that but he also bought components and built himself another computer--his third build.

When they are in prototype they will need a car.  I'm not suggesting that you run out and buy one but, if you are ready for a new one, your sailor might appreciate getting your old one.  We did that and handed him a 12 year old car with 140k miles but which was also in great shape thanks to our local mechanic.  Just remember that after Prototype, they will probably go to the fleet; so, a new car is probably not a good idea.  They will need basic transportation for Prototype.

And then their is the apartment where they will need EVERYTHING!  You might consider buying things like a crock pot or coffee maker when that time comes around.  But for just going to A school, a laptop would be fantastic.  If your sailor already has one, terrific!  Be sure to take it to the airport to give it to your sailor.  It will definitely be appreciated.  Ditto a cell phone.

How soon is Prototype after A School?

They have Power School between A School and Prototype.  I think Power School is about 24 weeks long but it may depend upon their rate.  Mine is an ET.  A School graduation was 10/31/2014; Power School was around 5/14/2015.

After Power School some go immediately to Prototype while others don't.  Mine needed time off; so, he had an extra 2 months.  They work at some job (lifeguard, grounds keeper, muffin seller--that was mine. the Muffin Man) or they may go to school if they lack a degree.  Mine and his roommate took some time to scout apartments during that off period.  They moved in right before Power School began and both were glad to be out of the barracks.  They were so happy that they bought air mattresses and slept on the floor until they got their furniture!  :-)
