Hello! My son is a MM at Goose Creek and is scheduled to start Power School on March 26, 2015. I am trying to plan a trip to see him after power school but he is having trouble getting an idea of any dates.

Does anyone know how long Power School would last- meaning is it exactly 6 months- He thinks he could get delayed if he misses a day or something for an illness or any other reason. I am also wanted to know if he can ask for a week off after power school but before prototype starts.

I really want to plan a trip to get to see him or have him meet us somewhere but it is hard when he cant tell me what timelines to look for!

Any help would be amazing~ Thank you!!!

Navy Mama - Power School is 24 weeks.  Usually missing a day won't set them back.  A more serious injury or illness could roll them back to the next class.....Usually they will get leave after Power School (but nothing is for sure!).  It also will depend on where they will be doing prototype.  If they go to Ballston Spa they (again, usually) give them some time so they can get moved.  (My son finished PS on 12/18/13 & had to report to BS by 1/13/14 (he also may have had more time than normal since it was the holidays & school goes on holiday stand down!).  If you look on the front page, to the right under the member profiles - there are 8 pages of info.  One is titled "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC".  It explains the time frame for each school.  Also, his SLPO should be able to give him a graduation date once PS actually starts. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much- I really appreciate your help- I know that it is hard to get an exact date and hard to plan when he will be able to have a break. I really dont want to plan something and then not get to see him! Thanks again!

It's probably a good idea to use Southwest Air too - that way if something changes you don't pay a change fee - just the difference in the fair - and you have up to one year from the date of purchase to use the tickets.  We're in CA too and we've visited sailor in GC & NY & we always fly Southwest.  And you can take 2 bags for free! (Now we're trying to figure out when we can visit in VA!)

Thank you so much for all your great ideas! I really appreciate your time and the site to be able to share with others and get such amazing advice! Thanks a million. Hope your day is great!

Navy Mama - another mom shared this link with me: http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/officer/Detailing/submarinenuclear/career/Documents/Init...

It's a training pipeline schedule. I don't know if it gets updated, but it's incredibly useful!

Thank you so much for your scheduled you shared! it was just the added comfort I needed to feel pretty good about the "guesstimate" on when to go out there to see my son! Thank you again and I hope you are having a great day!
