My son is currently still in bootcamp. I am wondering how much time he may get for liberty before going to A school in GC. Do they normally leave the day after graduation?

My son graduated on Nov 14, 2015, had the rest of the morning and afternoon to spend with us and had to be back by 8pm.  He shipped out to "A" School 6 hours later @ 2am.  His GF had traveled with us & she got a ride to the airport to spend the last few hours with him - his flight wasn't until 7:30am.

We stayed @ the Navy Lodge, got a family suite with full kitchen.  We had heard the recruits just want to take a shower all by themselves & R E L A X.  I cooked his favorite meal and we all just hung out. Very nice time !!!

I think they almost always leave within 24 hrs, my sons experience was much like fufu@the rock's, only we stayed elsewhere

Fufu, my Sailor also graduated that day and I was at the airport and probably saw your Sailor and his girlfriend. We had one of the biggest Nuke school transports that day from what I hear.  It was a tough morning for all of us.  Saying the "see you soon" to our Sailor was very difficult. Is your Sailor an MM or ET?  Just wondering if he is graduating A school soon?  My Sailor graduates next Friday the 13th.  I haven't found one parent that has a Sailor in my sons class.  Would love to for sure!  :-)

My son graduated 1/23 and was on a flight to Goose Creek by 6:30AM the next day (1/24) which they sent him to the airport at about 2am.  The only liberty he got was to spend the day with us before he had to report back to the barracks at 7:30pm.  Its short time for liberty but we packed two great meals and some down time to use electronics (cell phone and tablet computer).  It was quality time and that's all that counts!

Hello rhinosmom, welcome to the Nuke parent world!  :-)  After PIR your Sailor will get the afternoon into the evening (8:00 or 9:00 pm) as liberty and most likely (in most cases) he will bus over to the airport early Saturday morning, mine was there at 12:30 am, in which we met him and spent until 7:00 am when he flew out to GC.  Bring your tissue if you decide to do that.  That was the toughest "see ya soon" we have had to date.  You can meet him there and spend the wee hours of the morning until he flies out and that of course will vary.  I hope this helps.  I know we have allot more experienced Nuke parents on this site that may have more to add to this.  :-)

rhinosmom when does your SR have PIR?

For the rest of you... I've read lots about PIR day and have a good understanding of getting to the airport and getting through security with our boy but I'm wondering how we will know when he's being transported to the airport. Will that be info they receive before liberty call?

Your sailor will know that information when you see them at PIR.  My sailor told us when he had to be back to his barracks and when he was being transported to the airport.  He also had his flight information. They usually don't get this information until the day before graduation. I have seen people on facebook make a card that has blanks for their sailor to fill out such as flight number.  They sent it to their sailor prior to PIR and asked them to fill it out and bring it with them when you spend your time together.  Hope that helps.

For general info, I know the Navy uses both airports - I found this webpage

https://www.chs-airport.com/Flights/Arrivals.aspx

which lists all flights into Charleston in a day.  Considering that they'd want the sailors arriving in Charleston at a time they'd have support staff assisting their trip from CHS to Goose Creek and checking into barracks, There are three flights arriving from Chicago before noon in Charleston; two are from O'Hare, one is from Midway.  That would be a rough idea of the odds of getting a flight from one or the other, though the Navy would try to get O'Hare first, since it's closer to the base.  Available seats obviously is a factor, as well.
