Proud Mom and MamaDragon, thank you for sharing. Best wishes to both young women.  I hope my daughter does well.  Forgot to mention that my son is NF, too.  Both are set for PIR of 12/13/13.  Miss them greatly.  Proud Mom, I bet the weather is awesome!  We live in the cloudiest place in the country.  Blech.

Hi 8isenuff -- My daughter is studying to be an EM (Electrician's Mate).  She had her PIR on 9/20, and she has be loving being in South Carolina!   (The fall weather is a pleasant change from the drizzly gray windy cold that we have been experiencing in upstate New York lately.)  She is really enjoying the challenge of her studies and has made many friends already.

Hi, I'm still fairly new to this site, and learning how to find my way around.  I have 2 SRs currently at BC, brother and sister.  I was just curious to know if anyone else has a daughter in this field?  Thanks...

I was talking about having a Schwann's key lime pie delivered to my son at GC.
Would that have been it?

Mark and Mariab,

Thanks for the info on the christening.  My sailor told me today to wear comfy shoes as we have to walk through a construction site so that's good info too.  Hoping for great weather.  Really looking forward to this opportunity to be part of the navy's new ship.

USS Hawaii was in San Diego and they let me have a look. After you walk across the plank (not proper lingo) its easy to walk on the top. After viewing the massive cords and even seeing where they are tied to the doc, down the hatch we go. Toured the first two decks.  Saw the mess hall, (again, have Mom words, not technical )  If you have ever been in a sports fishing boat the tables are similar to that galley, so I found them comforting. They had white cake with icing out for the crew to snack, they have cereal and other items on view.  Showed me the process on the outside of the kitchen, They have a nice size eating area, unless you count how many are on board.  A quick orderly meal is then consumed.  No lingering, its eat and drop off your plates, bowls so every one get a time to sit while they eat.  A well oiled routine.  They take turns washing all the dishes meaning they each take a day of dish washing duty.    Was able to play with the eye in the front previously called the periscope. Viewed the sleeping quarters. The little cubby was quite comfortable since I am only 5'1" and only spent less than a minute curled up in it. They don't have much room for personal effects. They have a exercise bike and a tread mill. The ladders are steep and I didn't see an opportunity to slide down the ladder. Coming out of the hatch reminded me of trying to climb on the roof (which I didn't have a problem with until I turned 38). They have on the wall all the dolphin pins that are being earned by crew members. I was fortune enough to meet a very tall gentleman sailor that is earning his gold dolphins.  The crew has a distance limit, we then went up the the wharf and had a meal with our son.  Sweet - no tears just big hugs.
