Love your post B'snukemom.  My son drove back to GC today after being home following Power School Grad so I can't help but shed a few tears today.  What a wonderful group of sailors we have!

Happy Mother's Day to all of you!

With Mother's Day this Sunday I thought that I would share this - I borrowed it from SoCalOhana back in January:

"I will cry without shedding tears, cringe without showing my fears, pray without moving my lips, dream always of incoming ships.....for I am the mother of a U.S.Sailor" Author Unknown

Hope everyone has a wonderful Mother's Day and big hugs to all of you!  :)

HK 1853, I would think maybe after getting the information from this group on moving opinions, the best is that your sailor decides with you after getting guidance  from his transportation officials.  Would hate to see consequences for not following the rules.

BunkerQB, thanks for posting the Psychology Today article.  My son won't go to RTC until October, but have been enjoying (most) of the posts from this group.  In fact, I have "bragged" to my son about the Nuke Parents.  There (usually seems to be a level of common sense here that is lacking in the other groups -- really appreciate the comments and thanks to those who have shared their experiences.

One other point on do it yourself moves.  My son had to request a do  it himself move in writing, and acknowledge in writing he had completed an online training course about the rules on how to do, do it yourself moves, and he actually had to take and complete the online training course, including an online test.

Not sure if a training course  requirement was in place back in A school, I believe the online course was very new, as in within the last few months before my son moved.

In my sons case the triggering event for the move was detachment from the Power School / A-School command, not orders.  Detachment was when he out-processed and formally checked out of the barracks.  This is dictated by the command he is leaving.  He was a allowed a few days of travel time from the date of detachment until he had to report at to the prototype command, even though he was staying on base, just changing from the barracks to a house on base.

My son just did a U-Haul move in March ( SC to Washington state ), one of the rules is that you can not move anything the you acquired just prior to the move.

They also require the sailor to estimate, in writing,  the weight he is going to move before the move, and they can check it before the move  if it  seems excessive for a move from a Barracks.

Both the estimate and the final claim are in the form of a sworn affidavit ( oath ) by the Sailor.

Since you have been storing his stuff for him they might pay to move his stuff from storage to the house/apartment, but he should clear that with transportation before he trys to claim it, and the move from Goose Creek to Goose Creek is probably not going to generate that much money.  And if the storage was the same apartment he is moving into - there is no move at all.

On the other hand he is entitled to a one time move from place of enlistment to a base he is stationed at,   Not sure he can claim it retroactively, but he may be able to, even if someone else moved it for him and stored it form him.  I know the move from New York to Goose Creek while he was in A school would have qualified for up to ( I believe 4,000 pounds ) as a single E3.  The only question is if he can claim it retroactively, if your moving it for him counts, and if you have receipts to prove the move at this point.

The move from New York to Goose Creek is a different move than from Barracks to off base, but both may still be claimable, if you are talking about his household goods being moved, not his girl friends household goods.

I would suggest he just explain the situation, seek advice and read the regulations.

In my opinion it is not worth risking being expelled from the Nuke training program for fraud just to make a point about marriage.

Okay, I think we'll just schedule it today and get it out of the way!  And that's okay- I understand the disclaimer!  I forgot I still have a ton of stuff in storage so I figure I might as well move it now, and I feel like that is perfectly fair?  It's his stuff too and we're moving it to our place right?  Anyways, thanks Mark!

One more question- does anyone know if Charleston people for sure get weight reimbursement?  THere's rumors flying around now that it's only for NY people which is fine, I just want to clarify.

Oh and I know, I have so much respect for the navy wives and their families that are making the constant moves.  I just also feel sorry for these young kids that are getting married for the benefits.  In my bf's A school, by the time they graduated out of the 28 sailors, all but 6 of them had gotten married.  And I met a bunch of them and some were only 18 or so (not saying that you can't have a stabile marriage at 18), but gosh that just seems young!  Four (I think) of the boys and one girl had met their significant others in A school and had been married by the end of the six months.  Again, not saying you can't fall in love and get married that soon but two of our friends have already completed a divorce and I have seen more breakups than I care to think about.  That's what I just find kinda sad about it.  Not even 20 and already a divorce under your belt :/.

@skwrites - the point of removing wisdom teeth is to make sure that a sailor doesn't have an emergency situation with impacted wisdom teeth while deployed.  Normally, nucs have them removed before reaching the fleet, but they must have had some scheduling issues with him.  At any rate, they definitely will be pushing to get them out before he deploys.  Now is the time it truly needs to be done.
