Just left A school graduation! It is much smaller and lower key than PIR but go if you can. The military spirit is just as strong. Some tips: your sailor has to put your name on a list. The guard checks your ID at the gate. Try to get there by 7:00 for a 7:30 ceremony to figure out parking. You can bring your cell phone in and take pictures inside. The ceremony is held in the Rickover. There were no signs anywhere but everyone we asked was knowledgeable and nice. HOO YAH newest 3rd class petty officers!

No I never served on a nuclear submarine but they say that greatness often skips a generation. I am not half the man my father was either, so I think there is some truth to that. Lol

see your gonna get strong opinions either way. And like someone already said he can't just switch because he doesn't get his choice. Both have pluses and minuses and he will be fine either way. just my 2 cents.

William, my youngest took a tumble during Sub School, and his left arm took a big hit. He needed PT, etc. At one point he called and said he may be moved to a carrier and would not be able to serve on a Sub. He was beside himself and dug in deep with his PT to the nth degree. It payed off, he will get his Sub in the Fall...HOOYAH ! Wouldn't have it any other way for either of our boys!

My husband is former military, and seriously questioned our son on his understanding of what it meant to serve on a ship ( or boat ) for months at a time without returning home.

He strongly suggested our son consider the Air Force as an alternative.

But in the end he agreed with our son that the Nuke program was the longest and most valuable entry level training program in the military.

William were you on a sub?   Maybe I should know the answer to that, but I am getting old so forgive me if my memory has failed me :)

I feel sorry for anyone who volunteered for the submarines but was placed on a carrier instead. If there are too many able bodied volunteers the Submarine Service gets to pick and choose who goes. They are bound to select the best ones for submarine duty.

2nd sentence below should say consider nuke sub.

Comment by 1proudmama/EM/USSLincoln/CVN72 on March 21, 2013 at 10:18pm

my husband was on a nuke carrier the Ike back in the mid 80's. Wouldn't even consider nuke. Have friend that went thru nuke sub he hated it told son to go sub nuke. I said why did you do that if you hated it so much. I wanted to make sure he went in did his 6 years and wouldn't dream of sign-on bonus. So don't know who your sons talking to but he could talk to someone else and here say thing about subs.

Oh and when the carriers did come to Pearl, they actually couldn't pull directly into port, cause the water wasn't deep enough.  They were (are) an amazing sight.

Yea, I was there in 84.  I was at the periscope shop, right across the street from the club.
