OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Take lots and lots of pictures while you got him there. :) Its weird because as soon as I got to be familiar with boot camp it is now over as of today. LOL Now its time to start learning new things to try to keep up with what my sailor will be doing. :) Im just sooo very excited that he will be so close to home since I didnt get to go to PIR I am soooo looking forward to seeing him! Cant wait! Since your boyfriend has been an MM awhile I may have to pick your brain a few times as time goes on hope you dont mind :) Thanks so much

Comment by Connie foaling-lady (Groton) on December 21, 2012 at 9:32am: NCNarrator, my son is going to start the welding program in Jan... he did not volunteer, told us his orders got changed and that's that. My reaction was exactly yours, Who would be nuts enough to be an "emergency" nuclear welder!?! Yikes! But he has assured us, his skills won't ever be needed, in 50 yrs of the nuclear Navy, so far so good. Nevertheless, when I asked how many welders are on a sub, he says, "Uh, one ... that would be me." So no drawing the short straw in an emergency. On the plus side, it's great training. On the minus, one more thing for momma to worry about on sub duty!!

I think it was what they gave him to help him decide what he wanted to go for, and he figured it was easier to just send it to us than try to explain it. Smart kid!

He thinks he will have a better option of jobs when he gets out if he doesnt choose to go Navy career, which he prob will end up doing I would think, but only time will tell. :) I was starting to get worried because I cant make it to his PIR so I figured atleast I could make it up to him by visiting once a month and spoil him rotten :) Three and 1/2 weeks wouldnt be long enough time to do that properly lol Where did you get this paper you are talking about?

Comment by NCNarrator on December 21, 2012 at 6:05am: Southcarolinamom - the sheet I have says they also have Nuclear Power school for 24 weeks in South Carolina, and the Nuclear Power Training Unit (I think that's the prototype deal, but I'm not sure - someone else here probably knows for sure), for another 24 weeks. PLUS MM's have two additional programs they may qualify for - Engineering Laboratory Tech which is 13 weeks, and Emergency Nuclear Welder (you have to be a sub volunteer for that) which is also 13 weeks.

Of course, I read Emergency Nuclear Welder and think, "Who would be crazy enough to do THAT?!" LOL It sounds like MM is VERY hands on - lots to do and lots to learn.

My son has gotten MM which was his first choice so he was so excited, but he was under the impression he would be at A school for a year and half. I wonder what he is confused about? Do you think maybe he is confusing the total time it takes for A school and Power school and to finish the pipeline or whatever its called? Any info from you senior moms and dads would be greatly appreciated. Oh BTW My sailor will be having his PIR in about 4 hours! Bravo Zulu Edward!

Comment by NCNarrator on December 21, 2012 at 5:29am: Ingrid, we got a letter from my son today as well and he's going to be an ET. He's really excited, since he wanted either ET or MM but he was aware that the chances of getting ET were pretty slim.

According the the information he sent home, MM's are in A school for 14 weeks, EM's and ET's are in A school for 24 weeks.

Comment by southcarolinamom(Nuke MM) on December 21, 2012 at 1:31am: Ingrid...I sure hope that is just the first portion of A school because I was told by my sailor that he would be in charleston for A school for up to 18 months and I have been planning on spending some time with him while he is in our home state. :( now Im worried. I am going to try to look some things up and see what I can find out. Also MM is Machinist Mate which is what my son is as well.

Comment by GodBlessAmerica on December 21, 2012 at 12:58am: My sailor is scheduled to come home tomorrow. We are in the midwest and experiencing blizzard like conditions. Sure hope that the weathermen are right and this will clear up tomorrow. Sailor talked to us earlier today and had to rub it in that he was standing outside without a jacket on. Oh well, soon he'll be reaching for that jacket! LOL

All of our nukes are smart, or they wouldn't have made it into the program. In MY opinion, regardless of how the Navy actually decides the rating, hey are all needed.
