Ok, this is really a rookie question, but my son is graduating Prototype on Friday and I am wondering if he is achieving a new title or class or something.  I want to order a coin for him and I'm not sure what to engrave on it with the date.  He got the E4 which must have been after A School, and one with NNPTC Power School for that graduation.  Is there maybe even a name for the location they have been working?  This feels so dumb, but I really don't get any of this information from him and I want it to be a surprise.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Electronics: My son just came off of deployment on a fast attack. Prior to this time underway...almost all electronics were permitted, encluding a video camera on a transit trip...this time they were told to leave Everything at home. It really depends on the command, the mission, etc. and each boat's command will have their specific preferences and mission requirements.

Emily, is it possible that somebody mis-communicated along the way in retelling the bit about taping over a camera lens?  I really wanted to clarify that one, because a submarine sailor would be in deep trouble these days thinking that was OK and acting on it.  I doubt on a carrier it would pass in an area where cameras were banned, as well.  You are right - it does depend on command, regardless.

J's mom - I believe they report when their orders say, then they could be given new orders for a delay.  I remember some of my son's friends had that happen back in feb. and they were pushed back to April.  My son, who was on med. hold, has orders to report to Proto. in GC next Saturday, but he may report and be told there is a huge delay due to the reactor still being down.  He's hoping they go ahead and let the new ones who are considered "off crew" get started anyway.

I'm aware of that mark. Which is why I posted the information that I've been told from other wives about the protocol for submarines.

Just depends on the command. Every sub wife I've talked to has had a different experience. If you want to be on the safe side, get a tablet or iPad without a camera.

Worth being aware of, is that there are some big differences between carriers and submarines besides the obvious ones.  Camera and PED (personal electronic devices) policies are a significant one.  With sensitive areas and living areas side by side in most areas of a submarine, they are more restrictive with personal technology.  On a carrier, living spaces are much more removed from working (especially sensitive ones) areas.  This makes is easier to be less restrictive in the living areas.

Some commands tell the guys to put a piece of tape over the camera, but others don't allow them at all. A lot of wives had to buy their husbands the older iPads because of the rule. I've never heard of a problem with laptops besides the webcam part. Just information I know from other wives' discussions.

Thank you so much for the info

Genie,

It depends on the individual boat, with boomers generally being a little more restrictive than fast attacks.  There are security issues with devices that include a camera, and the capability to a computer network.  The trend in the fleet is to be more restrictive with these devices - especially anything with a camera.

Does anyone know if sailors can take personal computers or iPads on submarines? Thanks
