I was so impressed with the respect shown to my son while waiting at O'Hare to fly out after PIR. The pilot of the plane made a point of going around and speaking to each new sailor on his flight before they boarded. I second the need for lots of tissues. I'm crying just writing this.

michimom---what j's mom sadi is right.   my son was a depper for a year.  his recruiter helped him with him running.    he liked the pt (physical training)   i wish he would have practiced his swimming more though.  it took my son six times to pass the swimming test.  just goes to show they will work with them if they are having trouble.

my son's girlfriend was able to get a pass at the airport.

If you'd like a look at some of the country around Charleston and need a break from Olympics coverage during the day, the fourth of golf's major championships, the PGA, is underway in Charleston at Kiawah Island's Ocean Course, just west of Folly Beach.  The coverage will run around six hours a day now through the weekend, and will include lots of scenic aerial shots, and glimpses of other Charleston attractions.  The course itself is beautiful and unique; Robert Redford chose it as the setting for "Legend of Bagger Vance", with Will Smith (good golf swing), Charlize Theron (umm...didn't notice), and Matt Damon (lousy golfswing, sorry).   It's on TNT now and tomorrow, and CBS over the weekend.

If you get there at 1am when they do you can stand in line with them at 5am when they get their tickets and the ticket agent will help you with the gate passes.  I'm not sure how many you can get, I think it is only for family.  I think that there may be more information on the O'Hare airport website.

So where do these airport passes come from? The check in counter at the airport? Is there a limit to how many can go in with this pass? Thanks.

Thank you for all of the info!  I'm new here, and it's great to hear from people who have been through all of this.  My son doesn't start BC until May 1, 2013, so he has a long wait.  I imagine I will have a lot of information to digest between now and then!

when my son PIRed, we met him at the airport at 1am.  we stayed with him till he flew out at 7am.     it was nice to get the extra time with him before he left.   there were about 10-12 nukes that flew out with him.  we also had to get passes.  i used school IDs for his two brothers.  we stayed till sunday also.  we went and toured chicago for a bit on saturday after he left.   you will definitely love PIR.  it is amazing.   i spent most of my time trying to find my son among the sea of white uniforms!!LOL   it was hard having him close by and not able to hug him.  you cant walk up to them or talk to them until PIR is over.   they will get into alot of trouble and their liberty after PIR can be taken away if you do.  at least that is what i heard.

My son PIR'd on 6/1 and some of the nukes flew out on Saturday, but my son and 10 others got to fly out on Sunday morning. I met them at the airport at 1am and sat with them until they got on the plane.  While your son is getting his ticket you can ask for a military family member gate pass so that you can go all the way to the gate with them. (make sure your ID is up to date, one ladies was expired and they wouldn't issue her a pass)  We didn't find out about him leaving on Sunday until 2 days before PIR, so we were glad that we had planned to stay an extra day just in case.  Good luck and have fun at PIR.

Thanks Dotsy and Tina.  So very helpful.

Mamma D, my sailor PIR'd 7/22/12 and was scheduled to fly out of O'hare on Sat. at 2pm but when he got to the airport he was put on a 5am flight.  Also, the Nukes didn't all travel together.  I haven't heard of any Nukes flying out Sunday for a while but it is the Navy.....

Comment by Mamma D on August 9, 2012 at 11:40am
